Default A Canary in the Mine

That would be us in the Big Apple. (No need to thank us, it's just the price of glamor)

Another bit of news I actually witnessed today on the way to and from work.

I'm practically desynthesized to this kind of stuff, but never immune to imagining the possibilities. Nothing like heavy police presence to get you back on track of paying attention and reassessing where you are.

I am in awe of the resilient nature of the big city dweller. No question there is a lot to see and do in the city. It is not for me and I do avoid it now, I just get such a sensory overload that I can not enjoy it.

That's an odd story to say the least. Israel (or anyone else with half a brain) would never announce an attack in advance. Trying to figure out the angle for the announcement. I guess Iran has to plan for it even if they know it's not true. (shrug). I find it odd that NY would be targeted when those are obvious choices. Why not hit someplace unexpected?

Stay safe and keep the bazooka handy just in case.

It comes down to the old...Why do you rob banks? Because that's where the money is.

True, but you don't rob Ft. Knox. You pick some obscure bank that doesn't have a gazillion guards.

I wish you'd tell them that, Rick. NYC seems to be the catnip for all the lunatics of foreign extraction. Our own lunatics know better.

Shortly after I started work I was working in a new mental health prison in Illinois. The old one housed Richard Speck, John Wayne Gacy and other fairly notorious nuts. The new facility was just below the old one. One day we heard sirens go off at the old prison. It turned out 5 inmates made their way into an office and pushed an air conditioner out of a window and escaped. Three of them walked around to the front gate quite proud of their accomplishment and ready to share their brilliance with guards. A fourth made is way to town, walked into a bar and up to an off duty guard he knew and asked the guard to buy him a drink. Still in prison garb. The fourth was smart enough to make a break for it and was caught a few days later. So yeah, our lunatics are loonies but at least they are our lunatics.

I used to teach in a detention center that was 5 miles from the state line. Every time we had a runner they would head for home, even if it was 200 miles away, with every state agency on the lookout for them. Never once did we have a runner head for the state line, where no one would be looking for them.

The only people we had in in the system were the ones that were too stupid to look over their shoulder, or bragged about their accomplishments.

I do not credit the effeciency of the government agencies with our lack of terrorist activity, I credit the stupidity of the operatives. No really intelligent person buys into the willing martyer theme. If there were as many suecidal jahadists as claimed even those of us in "small town America" would all be hiding in our cellers wearing gas masks.

It's not really that big. They kept running around the block and getting back in line so they got counted two or three times. Sort of how they do voting.

Does this mean that I should take a trip, to get a 'strami sammich from Katz's deli, before it's too late?

C'mon up pardner, it'll be on me.
I had one way, way, back when I first moved to the city and it was obscene. Right up your alley.
I'll have the bread pudding. (equally obscene, btw)

Mr. B and I often play the 'what would you get for your last meal' game. This is if we were on death row and our time was up. What we usually have in mid would certainly kill us before we even walked out of the cell.

Crazy happens all the time in NYC -- I assume. Have a friend living in Spanish Harlem now and loves it.
