I think alot of you are getting away from yourself , this isnt Bears show , its the discovery channels show! He goes by what they tell him , this show is for entertainment , Les strouds show was for entertainment and any of the other shows about so called survival , you want to watch tv ,thats what you get , wanna live it then go do it , document your survival ,not many people want to see you sitting around for 10 hours a day doing nothing because you cant catch a fish or hunt for your dinner , it wouldnt be very good for audience , but if you want to try your luck , read up on it and then drive out somewhere , ditch your car and go live it , see if you can survive! I dont care if Dr bj says the shows not real who the hell is he? he has a survival school whoopty do , I could open a survival school ,just watching you tube , cause hey if its on youtube its real!!!

Go live it if you want it to be real otherwise kick back on your recliner , eat some popcorn , turn the thermostat up to 75 ,and drink a beer while watching Bear swim under the ice 30 feet in a land where its 10 below zero , cause lets face it thats fake right?

These shows are really an interesting composite of groups. I'm involved very much on the periphery with Greatest Tank Battles. It's actually a third party film crew that makes the show then they attempt to sell it to a network, in this case, the Military Channel. I'm sure the major channels commission their own work but there is also a lot of independent film makers that put this stuff together and hope the can sell the idea or the next installment if the idea is already in production.

First and foremost it's entertainment, secondly, the one thing that Bear always comes back to, and I think we all can agree on, that survival is having the mind set to never give up and explore all your options. I think he's a brilliant marketer, and hey, more power to him. I woudl enjoy gonig on a camping trip with him, but then I have enough backbone to tell him to knock any crazy crap off if he were to try it, lol.
Love him or hate him, I'd be willing to bet we're all a little envious. Where else can you travel the globe and do some kick @$$ stuff and get paid major bank for doing it.
You knocked it out of the park, Billdawg. Great post.

I had a compass, but without a map, it's just a cool toy to show you where oceans and ice are.

Can't say that being envious is something that comes to mind when I think about or see this guy.
I guess I have had adventures of my own, of my own planning and enjoying, that it really doesn't appeal to me, living vicariously thru some one else doesn't cut it.

He and others of their ink are TV personalities, entertainers that have found a way of making a living, doing something they enjoy....at least they seem to be, but not my cup of tea.

I watch, cut on them, use ideas and basically enjoy most of the shows....but when the time comes.....I throw my stuff in the truck, drop a trailer on the hitch, and head out of my own adventures.
    No complaints.

You're right, when I said envious, I meant more of the travel portion. Only place I have gotten free travel has been Iraq and soon A-stan, lol. Extreme camping at it's finest, hahaha

I dont watch the show much because simply being a show, takes a lot of the reality away for me. I think Bear is the real deal, but he is just taking direction from the producer because now it is job to him, and not real survival. He is just in it for the money and playing the game!

    Cool Wow!

Did you read that NBC interview that Warheit posted? OMG! Like father, like son! Junior's just a chip off the old block! Actually, I fully expect Bear to wind up like the late Steve Irwin!

Found another interview with Mr. Grylls. This one is pretty short, but I think some portions are worth reading.
