Knot Tying

I am no master at tying knots. In fact, I know very little about it. I stumbled across this website (I think my shoe lace came untied) and thought it might be useful for other non-master knot tie-ers.

Great topic. I love knots. As a kid I "collected" knots (in my memory.) Some kids collected stamps,comics etc. Knots was all I ever collected.
I think it would be cool if folks listed their most used knots in the bush.

There are so many, and then so many variations on a theme I thought we'd limit it to just our one most used AROUND CAMP & why?

For me:
1. Taught line hitch. Because it's easily adjustable for tension. As your cord stretches or your synthetic materials (tent, fly, hammock) you can snug it right back up with a pull. Great for tent/tarp stakes, ridge lines clothes lines etc.

I happen to favor that one as well. Quick and easy to tie, easy to adjust and just as quick to untie.

The one that I use the most is the square knot. I find it to be a very durable knot for general purposes.

Other than tying my shoes (you know some wise *** would point it out), the two knots I use the absolute most are the bowline and the trucker's hitch.

If you have an iPod touch or iPhone, Columbia has a nice little app on knots called WhatKnot. (I'm not sure if it's available for Android-based devices but you can check.)

Boy Scouts have been tying knots for years. Get a Scout handbook andb a Scout fieldbook bouth are good.

Yeah a great place to learn k-nots.

But it gripes me to no end that the main knot of all Scouting is the square knot. A knot that cut's rope strength in half, and when a figure 8 is so easy!

I've been using and learning knots more and more lately. I have several different ones that I use regularly, and some of them aren't even knots, but they hold. A simple bite on a loop with a tuck is how I let my bag down out of a tree. As long as there is tension on the line, it holds, and a little jiggle unties it so I can let my gun down after. I like the highwayman's hitch for tying up the boat. Figure 8's every 5 foot on my lift line lets me know how far off the ground I am.
I use a modified prussik knot to lash hides into frames because the more tension you put on it, the tighter it holds. When it gets slack in it, just slide the knot on down the line to retighten.
I'm glad I started learning more about knots. Useful for more than just shoes!
