NOLS Wilderness medicine

Has any one taken one of the wilderness medicine courses offered by NOLS? In particular, http://wildmed.com/Courses/WEMT_syllabus.htm

I'm trying to be EMT-B certified by the end of the summer (how many of you are scared *I* might be one of the ones to respond to your 911 call? hehe.) and I was thinking about picking up the WEMT upgrade , since the MGIB will pay for it (in retro, of course). I got their DVD a while ago when I first started looking at it, and it's a very nice recruiting video, but I've never talked to anyone who's ACTUALLY taken a NOLS course.

I have taken the wilderness firstaid class offerd my NOLS. I am going to take the First Responders course this year.

Ive taken a first aid course by the St Johns Ambulance service, Ive also done one with the NHS, Both of which i passed

I've taken the National Registry EMT-Basic and EMT-Paramedic exams. I passed them both. I just downgraded this month back to EMT-B. The paramedic was too much to keep up, plus I don't plan to ever work on an ambulance again so I'll stick with basic EMT. Anyway, I think WEMT is cool, BUT being the frugal I am I wouldn't do it if I had to pay for it. However, since you mention someone else will pay then have at it. The more training and repetition you have the better off you are.

I've taken the NOLS woofer (Wilderness First Responder) class and it was awesome. I've recerted it 6 times and every time I'm amazed at the new takes on old methods. I give it two thumbs up!

I have taken to NOLS Woofer, the SOLO Woofer, the St. John's ambulance wilderness 80 hour advanced wilderness first aid program, and also the SIRIUS Wilderness Medicine Program in Canada and I can honestly say that the best one I ever did was the SIRIUS Wilderness Medical Program. Currently I teach Wilderness First Aid for SIRIUS so I may seem a little biased but the SIRIUS Wilderness First Aid Program was the last 80 hour wilderness program I ever did before becoming an certified wilderness medical instructor. *************

That's really interesting. I think you are the first person I've ever heard of voluntarily downgrading from EMT-P to EMT-B. I have a bunch of employees who are EMT-I certified and run on my ambulance service and who also work in my Nursing Center as CNAs (a much lesser certification). When they work in the Nursing Center they absolutely cannot do anything that is beyond the scope of their CNA certification, even in dire need, and it is like pulling teeth to get them to understand and stick to that restriction. I would think that, having studied for and passed the EMT-P certification, you would find it difficult to limit your practice to the scope of an EMT-B - especially if someone with greater active certification was doing something wrong.

Not judging you, just saying it's interesting...
