i would use an old indian fishing trap, ...... section off about a 5' "U" shape upside down with large sticks shoved into riverbed, right off the shore out into the water. then come to the middle of the "U" in the deepest part of the water and set about 5 sticks coming back to shore and then 1 stick with some sort of bait{grasshopper, cricket, worm, bluegil} on the bait stick you want to barely split the stick so you can wedge the bait in the stick. submerge the bait stick in the ground and wait, go gather fire wood, gourd leaves and start a fire with some massive coals. use 1 handed rocks and place in the fire on the coals and heat them up. now check your trap, i got a 12 in channel cat , they are to stupid to swim out , i have no idea why but i catch them all day long just like this. thanks gramps.
now cut off head, gut it, wash it out, wrap in gourd leaves and tie with some long grass and place on hot coals and place rocks around fish and let cook 15- 20 min. eat and enjoy.
