"BEST" I'd have to go with Tru-turns.
Best primitive, I'd have to go with gorge and passive fishing techniques, like wier, net, and bowfishing.

Don't have time to watch the video this morning, but I will try to watch tonight.

Q: What is the best way to fish?

I have rekindled my passion for Fly fishing this summer...It may not be the most productive way to fish- but it sure is fun. So, I vote Fly Fish.

I voted for eagle claw because I have at least a few in every kit I have.

I have pictures of a private with the 46 AIB Anti-tank platoon fishing with hand grenades. He caught 100 pounds of fish!

When a Submarine was placed in drydock, and after the water was pumped out - a radiation survey had to be performed before personnel (not involved in the survey) could enter the drydock. I was always kind of fun to watch the two or three guys doing the survey while two or three others were scooping up large fish that did not make it out through the flood/drain gates.

There was always a fish fry at the Radiological Controls Facility the day after a submarine drydocked.

I didn't see drydock on the list. Nice vid Erunk.

You failed to include the most successful and common primitive fishing method, Wiers. The South Eastern streams and waterways were origionally laced with networks of wiers.

All you need is enough rocks to stack or poles to set that you impede the movement of the fish in their travels. They can be used pasivly or actively. A baited wier can produce a lot of food and you can be doing something else while it works.

There was a villiage spaced at about 2 miles along every sizable waterway and almost all of them had their own wier that streched partly or completely across the stream. The wier would have one opening and a basket would be placed across it. Sometimes the entire village would go upstream and force fish into the baskets and they troubled the waters ahead of them.

Ancient wiers have been found all over Europe and were used there until modern game laws stopped them. They are still used in South America, Africa and SE Asia.

Gill nets, illigal in most states due to their effeciency, are simply an artificial wier.

Hands and teeth is by far my favorite method, but those grape claspers look quite useful too. Nice!

the jeramiah johnson "hands and teeth" method of catching fish works great in the salmon streams of alaska. i like the thorn and grape vine clasper hooks , i can depend on that. building wiers, as a lone survivor, in cold water environments may not be the most practicle endeavor, even though very effective.

During my first tour, we would sometimes come across Iraqis fishing in ponds or the Euphrates and they would always ask to throw a hand grenade or two. Who wouldn't oblige a humanitarian aid like that? I had never seen it done before then, it was pretty fun and effective.

The Native Americans in your area disagreed with your rationale for around 10,000 years.

Of course they were not normally alone, like you will be near Lake Michigan with the other 12,000,000 people that live around its shores, give or take.

After careful consideration I think that hand grenades are the most scarce peice of equipment I would find or build from my survival stores. The expectation of their presence really highlights the various philosopies of survival we deal with. Lord help me if I am in a situation where I have enough of them to use extras for fishing.

it depends on the time / effort expense where a weir building exersize is concerned. as i mentioned "A lone survivor" on the move toward self rescue cant spend the time or effort to build a weir large enough fast enough to do any real good. however, if staying put is your aproach to rescue then a weir of effective size is probably a prudent aproach to hands free fishing. weather can also effect that decision, a tropical rain flooding a river or stream spoils a weir build. if you have three or four days to wait for subsiding water then wait. fish hooks work well in all of those mentioned conditions.

Picked a few handfuls of those tendrils yesterday, not only from grape vines, but also some from greenbrier. Do you think one is stronger / better than the other? Can't wait to make some of these hooks to try!

the claspers are all good to use. what really matters is the fish. the larger and heavier the fish the stronger claspers will be needed. for trout in the rivers here in NC the grape vines are best, but for brim fishimg the green briar clasper works best.....
