Take a large garbage bag and fold it open in half. Fill the bottom half with potting soil, punch some holes in the bottom for drainage and plant one half seed spud. Viola! Container gardening.

I've seen the tire way on TV before... but it was like on this link where you keep adding tires on top as the spuds grow, and not with drilling holes in the tires.

    Default Finally!

I have a new potato harvesting plan, you may all have noted I've avoided the subject thus far.

    1. Unleash hordes of pygmy cavalry on Spudsville, USA.
    2. Wait at command center for reports from Pygmy 1 that the attack was successful
    3. Kill off remaining adult males, enslave females and children (time honored tradition)
    4. Claim territory as part of Free Traxistan
    5. Bring in the trucks!
    6. Force newly acquired slaves, under the direction of loyal pygmy overseers, to harvest all those wonderful Idaho spuds and load up the trucks.
some fella confronted me the other day and asked "What's your problem?" So I told him, "I don't have a problem I am a problem"

step 7: stop off in McCall for a nice celebratory dinner on the lake, enslave population there for good measure.

Ok, I am going to be on topic... Sorry!

Why drill the holes for the spuds? I've always heard that the potato keeps adding roots and tubers all the up the stem and that is why you keep adding tires. When the potato shows its face, you add a tire and cover with soil or mulch. You keep doing his until it flowers and then you just let it grow... then to harvest, you just remove tires, one at a time. Supposed to get a decent sized crop this way. I haven’t tried, but am thinking about it next year with maybe 4 containers. Also they say one reason the tires are good is because the leaves get sunshine (for a bit until you cover them up again) and it is better for the potato. Definitely easier to harvest I would think.

Grow them in a five gallon bucket. They are easy to move around and instead of digging you can just fill around inside the bucket with yer hand.

And you won't have a bunch of tires to deal with in the off season unless you pulled them off the car to grow the spuds.

"Dude, how long is your van gonna be on blocks"
    "Until the harvest."
    "Cool."

I don't think you would get much of a harvest in 5 gallon buckets or you would have to have an aweful lot of buckets!

With the cost of gas, using the tires from your car may be the best way to go! Guests can not see images in the messages. Please register in the forum.

You can get about 3 pounds per bucket and grow them any time of the year.

    Thumbs up Sounds good!

Now that sounds like a deal! And being able to grow them anytime is a real bonus!
