Heirloom Vegatables fluke or myth?

I had tossed some vegetables in the garden last year, a couple that had ripened untill they were overgrown I missed during harvest. I didn't use Heirloom Seed and when the plants appeared this year I figured they wouldn't bare fruit, much to my surprise they are? What gives? Any idea what happened?

I'm sure they were open pollinated plants. They may or may not have been true heirlooms by definition as not all open pollinated plants are. From a generic perspective, you have hybrid, heirloom and open pollinated.

From Cowboy's perspective they are having babies! They are Carolina Cucumbers and Crooked Neck Squash! I'll be saving seeds this year!

Quite often seeds from Hybrid plants will germinate. What you get most likely will not look or perform like the parent plant though. They would have been open pollinated. That just means bees could travel from your neighbor's garden to yours or from one plant in your garden to the next. Heirloom seeds can be open pollinated too.

Agree with LowKey. They'll often make new plants and the fruit the first year may resemble the fruit planted but eventually they will revert to the parent plants or some wierd facsimili. We had some squash that was Zuchinni squash the first year and a mixture of zuchinni and crook neck the second year. Same batch of seed saved from the previous year but different plants from it.
