Home made knife steel?!?!?!

I found this the other day and have got to give it a go. If you read all the way through the thread at on point it says this thing has a limit on the cabon pick up at around 1%. One guy says he made some good knife steel out of bottle caps!!!!

Any you guys heard of this. I'll let you know what I find out. Going to give it a try real soon!!!!

yeah; there area good handful of people doing it, but makeing bloomery and crucible steel is a lot more work than a thread like that makes it look like.

if you have the motivation; go for it. i've abeen wanting to try some oroshigane for a while.

That was a pretty cool read for sure. Definitely must be harder than it sounds though. I mean, just working the metal must be a pain. That's a lot of hammering.

yeah; consolidating those into billets must have been a job and a half. it's gotta start out with a ton of slag and cold shuts. i bet a power hammer or press would go a long, long way towards saving labor.

I like to try stuff like this, if only to appreciate the "easy" way we have now............We still have buck-skinners that use Jim Bridger juice (charcoal lighter) for their fire, with the argument that he would have used it if he had it.........
