    Default I've been sick

I haven't been on in a while and wanted to let everyone know why just in case someone cared.

On my last trip I was splashed in the face with a good deal of overflow water on a beaver pond.

Well now I have giardia. I have been spewing from both ends for several days along with severe stomach cramps.

I have seen my doctor and am taking medication for it.

I'll let everyone know when I get to feeling better.

I like escalators, because an escalator can never break; it can only become stairs. You would never see an "escalator temporarily out of order" sign, just "Escalator temporarily stairs... sorry for the convenience. We apologize for the fact that you can still get up there."

Those little buggers can get in around the eyes, the nose or the mouth. Speaks to what can happen if you cross contaminate you filter hoses. And serves as a good example that it doesn't matter how far north you live you can still get sick on bad water.

If you start losing weight let your doctor know. One of the problems is malabsorption of nutrients out of the intestines and that leads to weight loss. Dehydration is a concern of course. Good luck and keep us posted. I hope you're better soon.

This would be a tough thing to endure out in the wilderness.
What if you had to get across some body of water, how do you prevent being splashed, and what would you carry in your BOB to deal with the consequences such as klkak is experiencing?

This is one of the reasons I talked to my doctor and he prescribed Cipro. At least it gives me a possible solution to Giardia as well as other infections and buys me some time to make it to a doctor. The truth is you can get splashed and rarely get infected. You can drink raw water and usually not get infected (notice I didn't say rarely). There's nothing you can do about the splash but, to me, not treating water is not worth the risk.

When my son hiked the AT there was a guy hiking with him that never treated the water. He came down with Giardia and fought it for 2 days THEN had to hike into a town to find a doctor. Not a story I want told about me.

Like most other organism, Giardia, is becoming more resistant to antibiotics like Cipro so it may or may not work for you. But it sure beats nothing.

The harsh reality for those dependent on the medical profession is they won't have it. I'm glad I never get sick. I guess that's the way natural selection works.

Kevin, get well soon, being sick is not fun anywhere.
Guess you can never be too careful.

Every time I see BG or even Les, drinks some of the stuff they do I thinking they would have to have shots before heading out just to stay alive long enough to complete the episode.

I am feeling a little better. The antibiotics and the bland diet are working but have left me feeling rather weak.
