Pan's replacement

What would you guys use instead of a pan when in survival situation?
Would you craft wood or do you have some genius tips to give to everyone (reusing something you'd have in your bag is allowed)?
If you don't succeed (for whatever reason) at creating your pan, how would you boil water?

Basic questions here, I believe.

EDIT: Just realized this suits better under "Making Stuff" forum. Could a mod move it there and remove this 'Edit' note please?

It's well suited for where you posted it.

Not sure what "survival situation" you envision. If you are going out into the bush, go prepared. If you are talking about some situation where you find yourself unprepared ...... people have left plenty of trash strewn all about to find something to boil water.

And it weights nothing. I say this because they are like 3 bucks or less and I have about 10 of them. Being prepared is always a good thing.

I usually have and use a canteen cup or a sierra cup with me. If not, I always have heavy duty alum/tin foil in my kit and can fashion one that way....you can in fact use a plastic bag to boil water, just do not let the flames touch areas that have no water, like the tops and stuff. You can also use your HAT... add water, then add HOT rocks to boil the water, this works really well if your hat is decent enough to hold water.

Nothing that falls under "genius tip", but boiling water come to mind and can be handled as proposed many ways, including a "hide bag/hot rocks" when you run out of "found trash". Water can be boiled in a plastic water bottle.

Cooking can also be done a on a stick, flat rock, or even packed in mud or big leaves (learn what kind in your area, so you don't poison your self), buried in the coals of a fire.

I always carried aluminum foil as a backup until I tried it once..now I carry the cheap aluminum bread pans (the ones made for one use)for my backup cookware. They can be folded flat and packed tight, just remember to take a few if you are going to be gone for more than a couple nights because they will only unfold a few times before they leak. For day hikes (one meal) I'll pack the food in a metal coffee can. When it is time to eat, I'll add water and boil over a fire. This works very well, only thing to remember is put the can over a fire and cook it clean before your hike to burn the wrapper and glue/plastic off. It can make the food pretty gross if you try to cook in a new can.

A 1 pound coffee can is one of my top three items in all kits. The tins are part of the storage of the kit. Each vehicle has a pack with one of these as part of the contents.

I hiked the AT for 3 months with only a 1 pound coffee can and a spoon as cooking and eating gear.

In the bush you do not fry much due to lack of grease so I find fry pans a bit restrictive. Most food is roasted over the coals or boiled.

I have found that the old Boy Scout cook kits fry pan is just the right size to boil up noodles and sauce or rice and sauce packs. Pour in the food, fill the pan with water and cook until the sauce is thick. That kit also has a small pot one can use for a cup of coffee or tea. you can pick them up at thrift shops for a couple of dollars.

I was asking for a way to create a pan with natural ressources available in the wild. Only items you have: your clothes and knife. :P

You can make a container from Birch bark and pine pitch. you then heat the contents by placing stones into the contents rather than direct heat from a fire. I have not made one myself, and it was made by someone who had obviously made one many times before, so I have no idea how easy or hard it is to master.
