U.S. officials from President Obama on down are trying to reassure residents of Hawaii, Alaska and the West Coast that there is little chance dangerous levels of radiation from Japan will reach them. But there is still a lot of understandable concern. Dr. Jon LaPook reports on the radiation risk, and the fear factor.

When radiation began leaking from the stricken power plants, the fallout was felt more than 5,000 miles away at a pharmacy near Los Angeles - it was soon sold out of potassium iodide.

Well, the start of the radiation plume will hit USA West Coast on Friday. Although very low levels, it is only the start and can only get worse. We will see how fear Vs. reality will take place. Iodide tabs are already sold out even though Thesium is NOT the immediate danger. I had bought a really good supply of the tabs, but I also received correct dosing instructions of when and where. Taking them w/o a credible threat can also cause real health issues. There are stories of people actually DRINKING Iodine..........then they get sick and fear the radiation has already hit them and in reality it is just the body rejecting the iodine.

We are in for some crazy times comming up soon.

Why do you say it can only get worse? The radiation levels hitting the west coast are negligible.

Because releases of radiation are larger, the radiation zones have been expanded, increased radiation = increases in ongoing plumes reaching the West Coast USA........

Worse is worse regardless of so called SAFE levels of radiation.....

Doesn't that sort of discount wind and weather patterns? You could have a giant release in Japan today and it never make to the US. Dispursed over 5000 miles sort of dilutes it a bit don't you think?

Sure, but I checked the weather patterns, no significant changes are due. The heavier particals will of course fall near Japan, but the light particles... will hit our coast and worse is still worse. Heck rick, they are still trying to tell us only 5000 people died from the tsunami and earthquake when reports say whole villages and towns were destroyed that had 7,000, 11,000 and 14,000 respectively. Do we really trust the numbers they are telling us. How many times have our and other gov'ts told us things are safe.... enviroment, economics and health wise and people are still dying or in hard times from those statements.

I do not trust them for one second...and the fact NOBODY is talking real rads, sieverts or rens....should scare the hell out of people on the Wast coast as well as the Japanese peoples, countries in the path of the radiation and for the environment. They just keep saying they are safe levels.......safe for who, those in their cushy homes in DC....

Sorry Rick, too many different stories of both extrems and too many claims of safe even though they admit they do not have the real information...yet reports of NO water in the pool or little water in the pool at reactor 4. Given my limited knowledge of radiations workings, effects and patterns as taught by the Navy at Sub school for deployment on Nuke Subs.... somebody, somewhere is truly trying to pull a fast one here.

Slight of hand, smoke and mirrors and misdirection is what I am seeing on Fox news, Cnn and MSNBC....the reporters are not being given the whole story, everyone knows it.....you can see it in their reports, in their faces. You can see it in the faces of their and our gov'ts.

So in the end, worse is worse, regardless of so called SAFE levels as reported by the Japanese Gov't and our own Gov't.

Also in the end, there really is no SAFE level of radiation, as they do not know exactly which individual particle will cause you to have cancer, nomas and other aliments....they can only say at this dose, this happens on the average person. At .05 sieverts.... just one of those particles can be the cause for a start of cell destruction or morphing as easily as .5 or 5.0 can......the rate of attack is just faster at higher levels, they are however the same exact particles.

(btw, just heard on 9 news that a flight from Tokyo has set off radiation detectors at O'Hare airport....)

No seriously, it is all under control. And furthermore, the radiation detectors only go off on less than dangerous doses. And if that fails, GE can simply raise the sensitivity threshold on its scanners so no more vile, malicious false alarms such as this are set off in the future. "Mayor Richard Daley acknowledged today passengers on a flight from Tokyo had set off radiation detectors at O’Hare International Airport, but he offered no details and said federal officials will be handling the situation."

"If I-131 were released into the atmosphere, people could ingest it in food products or water, or breathe it in. In addition, if dairy animals consume grass contaminated with I-131, the radioactive iodine will be incorporated into their milk. Consequently, people can receive internal exposure from drinking the milk or eating dairy products made from contaminated milk. Once inside the body, I-131 will be absorbed by the thyroid gland exposing it to radiation and potentially increasing the risk for thyroid cancer or other thyroid problems."

So anything you eat or drink that is contaminated or if you breath it in then you will become contaminated and require Potassium Iodide.

There are a lot of different types of radiation and that's dependent on what the fuel rods were composed of. If I understand it correctly, the only one you can protect yourself from (medically) is I131 by using the Potassium Iodide (KI) Pills. External contamination for anything else can be washed off using plenty of soap and warm water. That information is also in that link or perhaps someplace else on the CDC site. I've been reading through quite a bit of their stuff this evening.

Internal contamination of other types has to be dealt with by a doctor. The can prescribe Prussian Blue or a chelate chemical. Both bind with the radiation in your body. Prussian Blue excretes it out through the bowels and the chelate excretes it out through the urine.

The US apparently has quite a stockpile of the stuff and it's scattered around the country in first response facilities. They can load up aircraft (fixed wing or choppers) and fly it in from any of the warehouses. KI, Prussian Blue and the chelate chemicals are all part of the response kits. The kits look like those big transport cans FEDEX or UPS use on their planes. They are pretty big and there are a lot of them at the storage facilities.
