I thought many might find this of interest. This is how I see the government conspiracies working. One rogue in the right position does something wrong. Not a concerted effort by an organized group. As this example shows, someone is always going to to blow the whistle. No major conspiracy can overcome peoples moral convictions.

If this is true then the general should be relieved and asked to leave the service.

Yeah, if it's true, he needs to retire now. Facts should be what drive the decisions our policy makers make. For the life of me, I cannot figure out why senior officers are so enamoured with Rolling Stone Magazine.

What a laugh, considering the man survived 7 yrs. as a POW with his mind intact and now this clown's asked to "play with his head"? Honestly...
As far as Rolling Stone goes...whether one agrees with it or not, it is a good magazine with an excellent reputation for some high caliber writing of all stripes. I still remember the article P.J. O'Rourke (conservative) wrote about the war in Kosovo years ago.

I remember the advice given me by a very senior manager years ago. Let your case stand on it's own merits. If it can't then you either haven't done your homework or it's just not worthy.

I agree with that, but the art of "selling" has always been one of the highest forms of Art esp. in this country. Not to mention, well paid. Whatyagonnado?

If this is true, he should be stripped of his rank and jailed. Our military has a tradition of be apolitical and staying "above the fray". For a senior officer to attempt this course of action is disgusting. Fortunately it apears that members of his Chain of Command had some integrity

Let's get to the bottom of the story. What politician ordered the General (or suggested to the General) that he do this? You can be sure that he didn't act alone, yet he will certainly take the fall alone. I believe that our military officers are invariably men of high intergity, however the higher up the chain of command you go the more confused some folks get. Are we loyal to our leaders or to the constitution? Some get this confused, especially when their career is on the line. I doubt we'll ever know who ordered such a scheme, as I'm sure the General will fall on his sword before giving up his superior. Look at Col. Ollie North. There are many classified operations that the public doesn't know about, even decades later. I have first hand knowledge of this. I'm sure that many will eventually be exposed, like the drug and radiation exposure experiments done to our troops and civilian populations. However there will be many that will not be, due to their highly sensitive nature. I'm sure that the misguided politician(s) involved in this program thought that he was serving his country and that the ends justify the means. Once people reach a certain level, many feel they are beyond the law when acting in what they believe to be the best interest of the country.

Government run propiganda campains directed towards U.S. citizens are currently under way, and have been for a very long time to sway public opinion, under the guise of advertising, public relations, diplomacy, etc. Both left and right have been behind them, depending on who is in power at the time. I see little difference in the basic concept - one's just a little more aggressive and effective, yet both are equally despicable. It's a sad fact of life we can do little about.

Chip
