    Default acetone

I was visiting a supplier earlier today. I noticed they had a lot of product in 55 gallon drums. I've been looking to pick up a few drums for some projects. I asked the warehouse guy if they had any drums for sale. He pointed out some barrels by the dumpster and said I could have them. the drums had acetone in them and because of this there was no deposit on them so they are free to take. I loaded up three of the barrels and a couple of them has acetone in them. I figure about 7 gallons of acetone.

What can I use acetone for?

Umm, I guess you could open a nail salon.

I would be careful with it. It is a noxious and flammable liquid. Terrorists use it to make an explosive for suicide bombers, called TATP. It is dangerous enough that large sales are required to be reported.

It removes paint, glue, great for glass cleaner. Lots of uses!

I guess I'm fortunate to get the barrels with some acetone left in them. I reckon that I've been dealing with this company for 20 some odd years and they know me well so they weren't concerned about me doing wrong with the acetone.

can acetone be stored in a plastic container?

You can "weld" plexi-glass with it.

It will definately blurr plexiglass...do not use to clean plexiglass!

It's best to store it ina glass or metal container as it an organic compound and will eventually degrade plastic. Once you have decanted the Acetone, vent the drums for a couple of weeks to give any remaining time to evaporate. Please be aware Acetone is highly flammable and will cause an explosive reaction with anything acidic. It will also strip the oils from your skin so wear gloves.

Here's an MSDS(Material Safety Data Sheet) for your information.

It will - that's why I used the term weld in quotes. We used to build storage bins with plexiglass. We'd construct the bins, drill and pin the sides, and then using a glass syringe - "lay a bead" of acetone to weld the seams.

I have some steel jeep cans in the barn, those should work for storing the acetone. I'll tag them up good so there won't be any oops moments.

Acetone makes a good additive to diesel fuel, increases fuel mileage and cleans injectors.
You can google acetone and find articles on adding to fuel.

Thanks for that info Crash! I may just have a project to use it on.

It may weld acrylic but it will melt polycarb clean through. Be sure of what you are working with.
We only use acetone in the shop to remove excess contact adhesive during the laminating process or to strip metal clean of oils before finishing.
For bonding acrylic we use Weld-On products.

I used acetone in the lab to dry glassware after drying. Squirt the beakers and flasks with it, swish it around and pour out, it would be dry within 2-3 seconds. As stated before, wear gloves. It will dry your skin out fast.

I usually use acetone to clean a knife blade just before I epoxy the scales onto the knife. it is prudent to make sure the acetone has completely evaporated before slapping the epoxy to it. a quart lasts me a very long time.

For the bins we were constructing, it was critical to not have any veiw blocked. We first used a silicon sealant, but caused a little too much interference. After we used the acetone we used a flameless torch on all of the edges to make them transparent (melting the edges makes them very clear).
