Barney Hajiro passed away . He was the oldest living Medal of Honor recipient. He was something of a stand out even in a unit of outstanding soldiers.
May he rest in peace.

Honorary pallbearers from the 442nd Regimental Combat Team salute Medal of Honor recipient Pvt. Barney Hajiro Feb. 14 as his casket, carried by pallbearers from the 100th Battalion, 442nd Infantry Brigade, is moved during a burial service at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific in Honolulu. Hajiro's unit, comprised of Japanese-American enlisted personnel, was awarded 9,486 Purple Hearts, eight Presidential Unit Citations, and 52 Distinguished Service Crosses, the second-highest individual honor in the Army. Hajiro received three of those. He was the oldest living Medal of Honor recipient at the time of his death on Jan. 21. He was 94

There was a Medal of Honor winner on Sons of Guns the other day. He was said to be one of two living recipients from WWII. They restored his flame thrower which he had used to take out 7 pill boxes on Iwa Jima. He fired the thing when it was done and I'm telling you he was transformed doing so. Incredible history.

I hear they only give them out for acts of self defense and saving of comrades these days, as opposed ot destroying the enemy, like in WWII.

Not quite accurate, SSGT Guintas recent award was for also killing the enemy, although the saving of a comrade (who subsequently died) was the motivating factor
