    Default Dog owner drama.

Noticed my Shelti severely favoring her front paw last night. Unfortunately I can't get her into the vet until 3:00 this afternoon. She was out playing with my son yesterday evening and I guess her tiny paw broke through the hard snow while she was running. Lord I hope she didn't break it.

It's really hard to carry a 40+ lb. dog in and out to go potty in this icy junk...

Hope that your puppy dog is OK. It's tough sometimes with pets that are family members when we just can't ask them what's wrong.

I'm sorry T, sure hope whatever it is will be mended. It's hard to watch an animal in discomfort in any way.

Thanks, guys. I was looking into breaks...and it almost looks as though she would be BETTER OFF if it broke! How crazy is that? Seems that if it's broke, the cast will stop the pain and allow for them to walk on it as normal. (really hard for a hyper shelti to stay still and not get depressed.)

I don't know...maybe I'll get lucky, it will be a bruise or something and she will feel better in another day or two. Guess I can only hope!

Same is true with people. A broken bone takes about 6 weeks to mend. A tendon strain or pull can take months. I hope your pooch is okay and just looking for sympathy.

Or may not heal completely at all. Just ask my right ankle from a sprain seven years ago.

Well...turns out to be a slight sprain. She's putting a BIT more pressure on it today, but not much at all. They gave me some pain pills that will help, but I'm going to have to lift her a LOT in the next few weeks.
While she was there, I had them look at a spot on her rump, and it seems she picked up some skin problem while at the groomers. Ick. So I got antibiotics and soap for that too. I had other plans for that 200.00. LOL!
At least it's not broken, and she's showing signs that it's minor. It's up in her shoulder...the way she was hobbling had me thinking it was in her wrist!

Pain pills, cool. You've got a good vet. Did you get anything for the dog?

LOL! I figure I'll take half and give her the other half, Rick.

    JOKING!

Yeah, I don't like to give her much of that stuff, as it can really hurt her. I'm supposed to give her half a pill in the morning and half at night. I may only give her the morning pill, to get her through the day. If she's not moving much if at all at night anyway...I don't know that I will give that dose.

Hey T - The whole key to painkillers is to get enough in your system to manage the pain and keep that level in place. Don't cut your dog short on the pills unless he's having trouble with them. Follow the vet's advice so your dog is comfortable. Otherwise your dog's pain will be up and down. No sense in that.

I feel your pain. And your Doggie's! My dog was diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency and a cardiomyopathy a few months ago and it has been a struggle to keep her weight on. The vet bills are HUGE. There was a few months it looked like her medicines were gong to cost over $400 / month, at which point I would have put her down. Now it looks more like about $90 / month... 2 doggie echocardiograms, IVs and 4 vet visits ain't cheap either.
