Default A Good Reason To Back Up Your Pooter.

A few days ago something sent my computer into a terminal bluescreen. I uninstalled and installed stuff and I think I gave it a migraine. Anyway, the upshot was I had to have it go through a recovery to Factory settings and all data was wiped. Luckily I had everything backed up on a USB widget so I only lost a couple of bits that hadn't been backed up. It only takes a few pounds/dollars(for the widget) and a little time, so if you don't do it already, please make sure you do!

I thought that if your pooter got backed up, you ended up with dingleberryitus.

That happened to a friend of mine.

Losing your data can be a real stinker.

I use a 1 TB external Hard drive...I send all of my files to that instead of to the Internal HD..makes the Computer run faster and prevents loss of Info like that...lost all of my Napster files to a hard drive crash a few years ago..was not happy...now Its a habit...I use a small 4GB jump drive for my portable files so that if I have to leave in a hurry They come with me...just because society falls apart doesn't mean that computers are going to disappear...or that the Info you leave on your wont comeback to harm you...A friend in my car club said"a real friend ,is one that will erase your hard drive for you if you die suddenly"

I can not agree strongly enough about backing up your data, and doing so regularly. There is also software that can back up a complete image of your disk to preserve the entire install state so nothing needs to be re-installed or re-configured. Norton Ghost is a good (if very expensive) example. other examples to be found here.

the pooter on the other hand...

I did the external hard drive thing until my wife dropped it and broke it. We had a lot of pictures on that drive. When my daughter smashed my laptop hard drive (she was 4 and her brother made her mad), I was able to recover the files by using it as an external and Ubuntu as the OS. Windows would crash when I used it.
I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

I dropped and broke my external drive too, but the SATA disk inside it was perfectly fine, so i just took it out and used it with a SATA/USB adapter ($20 or so). it was a pain in the ***, but at least the data was intact.
