7.62x39
This winter on the trap line I decided to carry a little Ruger 77 in 7.62x39 in the event I got a shot at a deer.
I bought it several years ago for a good price. It is stainless/synthetic. No sights so I put a low powered Burris variable scope on it.
I use Cor-Bon's 150 grain load. It runs right at 2300fps out of this gun.
I really like this little rifle. Its light to carry and a delight to shoot. It makes a great boat gun.

I grew up hunting with a Steven's bolt action 30-30 which when boiled down to it, just about the same thing. I definitely can see why you like it.
I saw one of those at a hardware store on the coast. It has some of the most beautiful wood on it that I have see in years. Rich grain, character, and a deep glossy reddish hue. If it had not been so pretty, I would have probably picked it up. I am just to hard on a rifle in the woods to have a really pretty one.

Ballistics are about the same as the 30-30 and with the right bullet should make a heck of a deer gun.
Is that the little carbine model?

I have one of those Ruger M-77s. I really like but was thinking of rebarreling it to 6.5 Grendel. It's a tough decision as the 7.62x39 is cheap but the 6.5 will give me a flatter and farther range with more knock down, that and I can make 6.5 Grendel brass from 7.62x39 brass.
I know what hunts you.
Mine has a 20 inch barrel.
Every year I usually pick a different rifle to take out on the trap line for shooting deer. I had forgotten how pleasant this one is.
SARKY, I have a rifle in 6.5x55 which is another rifle that I've used for deer hunting up here. I think I'll keep the Ruger a 7.62x39.

Okay.... I've hunted for 40 years. Never been boat hunting. What time of year do you hunt them?
If by what I have learned over the years, allow me to help one person to start to prepare. If all the mistakes I have made, let me give one person the wisdom that allows them to save their life or the life of a loved one in an emergency. Then I will truly know that all the work I have done will have been worth every minute.
Sounds like a great 200 yard deer getter. It doesn't get much better than that. Light, portable, and very low recoil. Good luck.
