to get some wild edibles. I was out squirrel hunting and found some rose hips and mullein and decided to make tea.

Rose hips are available, fresh mullein leaves, and there are still plenty of Autumn olives to be had. I'm sure there's more plants and such available for those in the know, but these are the ones I know. LOL!

I saw some lettuces starting to bolt up and flower too which I thought was strange and the Soapwort is still blooming and green.

We've had plenty of frosts already and it's been getting down in the 20's at night.

Too true. It was 72°F here today and is supposed to be in the low 70s the remainder of the week before turning cold. Good time to be in the woods looking for the last of the seasons vittles.

I noticed a lot of stachys floridana near the flowerbed at work today, so as I was getting a drink of water, I dug around a little with my finger and pulled up a few rattlesnake roots.
I thought at first they tasted like green peanuts, and then I thought it tasted like rich earth. Juicy too. There's still lots of foodstuffs down south.
All my mullein has gone to ground, except for one in the garden with the volunteer mustards.
which reminds me, wild radish and many mustards like shepherds purse are coming into season down here. Radish is blooming everywhere and I spotted some pennycress sprouts in the flowerbed at work today.
I asked the lady if she minded if I ate her weeds and she said "As long as you're sure they're weeds".

I don't know how far north the mustards grow in winter, but they grow here all winter long and like the cold.

garlic mustard is on my winter list

The leaves survive the winter, and you can even find them under the snow

I am curious YCC, do the greens come in twice down there? Spring and fall?

On the weather subject. We typically get some very minor flurries in October and I'm one of the onlyones who ever notice them. I didn't notice any this year. I think we're in another heat wave of southern winds and it got up to about 60 yesterday and today, but is still getting below freezing at night. There was a big fog on the way home from school tonight.

I feel that when the snow does come it will dump on us. I love snow and ice, but don't like deep snow because I no longer have a truck and have a hard time getting into my spots if the snow gets over 6" or so. Plus, it makes it harder to track deer. My bumper starts to act like a snow plow and I still drive like I had a truck. Don't know when to stop and back out. I just keep plowing ahead.

If I had my way it would snow 3", stay just above freezing in the day, dip below at night so the ice would stay froze, and each day we'd get another good dusting of snow to cover all the old tracks.

All 18" of snow is good for is making Quinzees, snow forts and increasing insurance premiums.
