Interesting concept. I have used saw dust mixed with fiberglass resin to tighten wood joints and a gusset material. While interesting if you are standing there at 50 below with a hand full of sawdust you are screwed. Even primitive man understood the need for preparation and the change of seasons. Primitive skills are useful I just see too many taking them out of the context of the environment they were being used in and all the other aspects of life and preparation to make them work. Primitive man has much to offer in thier ways but thier tools are the least of thier knowledge.

you have a point, i wouldn't try ice glue in my environment...i thought it was interesting from the point of view of a former deer hunter...the addition of the side points would turn a solid arrow wound into a bleeder wound...at least those were my thoughts...

perhaps i misunderstood the article,,,my impression was the "primitive" man" would have several of the prepared prior to locating the animal he needed to shoot...i have to agree,,,if you're out hunting and see a deer for example, your handful of sawdust at that point would pretty much be useless

as far as my utilizing this method,,,i don't plan on going anywhere cold again in this lifetime,,,unless we have another "Katrina"...

That was a pretty cool link. I really like the concept. I can see making up several of these in the wickiup and setting them outside to harden. Nice post.

This could be great info (have not tried it myself) but indeed interesting. My point was mainly directed at newcomers who might tend to get a false sense of security from a little bit of knowledge. Others on here are very capable in primitive ways like YCC, WE and others that know thier limitations and usefulness and context of thier knowledge through experience. You may have this kind of experience as well, you have to post more to know you better. Just trying to bring the stary eyed newcomers back to earth and put things in perspective. To sum up how I feel until you can build a fire like YCC you should bring some matches just incase.

I watched an episode of Mythbusters where they built a pykrete boat, put a motor on it and took off. It worked......till it melted. (but did last for a while)

I think that is a really creative way to make use of your resources. I wonder if charcoal would work as well? AS will have to try this one out for us. It rarely gets below freezing here.. I'd have to try it in a meat locker. Cool link. Water truly is an amazing material. I would never have thought of using it as a binder.. our water doesn't get hard like that haha.

I will test this in my winter drills but still a ways off before it is cold enough. I subscribed to this thread to get back to you. I'll ask some old Eskimo's if they ever heard of it too.

still wonder though about the fellow who was probably out spear fishing and stepped on a small oyster bed,,,cut his foot...then decided to break open the shell and eat the innards...

I would think a lot of "inventions" are just dumb luck and by accident. You can see some cave dude pick up his spear to find a bit of flake frozen to the end of it. "IDEA"! Wouldn't he have been the cat's meow with the guys when he came srollin' in with the the modified point? Probalby made a hit with the gals, too.

I think you give the thinking abilities of man too much credit. He probably saw an otter doing it and copied his behavior. I learn from nature.

i kinda sorta figure that's what happened to AS...i was trying to make a funny..oh well didn't work...

i'm already convinced you don't give a thinking man nearly enough credit...if you did, perhaps you wouldn't "think" so much of yourself and so little of others you don't know...

i AM new to the forum here and I am as nice to people as they let me be...as far as me making my bones to impress you with my knowledge..feller...you're trying real hard to not let me be nice...

so before i get in trouble with the Mods...i'm gonna get a cup of coffee and get back to my reading...and to you Sir,,,please...have a nice day...

    God Bless and Keep you

I'm sorry you took it that way and not what I intended as I wrote it. Please accept my apology and try to understand that things don't always come across the way I mean them either. You are wrong about me, I know I'm an idiot.

I appreciate both of you handling this amicably. You both serve as a good example to others. Thank you. Mis-communication and misinterpretation is all too easy in this setting.

it is very hard to convey tone with letters on a screen. I also applaud you guys.

there's a lot of possibilities of how the method came about. Who figured out how to make a solar still? That's using the sun and heat as a resource. This is sort of the opposite, and like most primitive / ancient lifeways, it most likely was discovered by accident.
I side with AS on this one.. humans are dumb animals who tend to overthink the obvious (at least, I know I do). Animals on the other hand are simplistic in their way of thinking.. They don't think to themselves "how can I do this without a chainsaw". They just start gnawing.
Rick is probably spot on. The neanderthal who figured it out most likely picked up his hunting stick, and a flake was frozen onto it.. New invention! We could theorize and postulate about this all day long. The important thing here is the idea of using the temperature as a tool, just as with a solar still. think igloo (shelter) and sled (travel across snow).
Somewhere inside my old noggin, some wires sparked against each other and I had an epiphany. I'm glad this thread was posted!

    Thanks Justin Case.......I think?

YCC, the cold is a tool. It is both friend and foe. It aids transportation, preserves food, and defeats enemies. There is an advantage in all things.

the more i know, the more i know i don't know...

That's right! We just have to have our minds open (and our eyes) to be able to identify uses of normally mundane things, like cold or heat. Really interesting thread, guys. Makes one's gears get-a-turning!
