I ride my bike 10 km every night. Incase i need to flee from some bullys, i need to be able to run.
I lift weights, incase i have to protect my mother or little brother, i need to be strong enough to push away the bad guy.
I did 1 year of jiu jitsu so that im able to protect myself against theft/sexual harrasment.

I've sort of been hoping someone would sexually harass me for over 30 years. Some women's volleyball team, NFL Cheerleaders, some women from a shelter. I don't really care.

back in highschool i used to ride my moutain bike like 15 miles a day if the weather was decent, but than i tore my acl playing football and had to get it replaced. spent 6-7 months recovering and almost a whole year before i was back at 100%. i gained alot of weight and 3 years later and im still trying to get rid of it. college dorm food didnt help much either, but now that im living off campus and cooking my own food im down to about 30lbs away from where i was in highschool.

Hoping but not getting... Wonder why...
Survival is not about surviving AGAINST the nature. It's about surviving WITH the nature.

You can't go in to nature, nature is not a place or an object. Nature just is. You are living it.

You guys have got it all wrong!!

I have done extensive study on the survival situations of the world and have come to several astonishing conclusions.

As you all know, our bodies were designed as feast and famine mechinisms. We gain fast and loose slow. There is a reason for that, and we call it SHTF. In the olden days they called it FAMINE and humans are made to endure it and win. Otherwise we would have gone extinct long ago. Modern society works against all of nature, including our survival.

3,000 calories to a pound of fat. Calorie use per day at sustanance level 2,200.

    1. It is all math, calories in, calories out. If you are working, moving, exerting yourself you are burning calories. If the effort does not bring in more calories than you expend to get it STOP IMMIDIATELY!

    2. Place yourself in a situation where you burn the least number of calories to obtain the shelter, water, food. Do not build a shelter, find a shelter. Stop thinking of things to do. Conserve you calories.

    3. The person that goes into the situation with the most calorie reserve wins. The person that is 20 pounds overweight can sit for 3 weeks, doing nothing, before he is down to "normal weight". The guy that starts with the high metabolism, heavy muscle mass, height weight chart perfection and no reserve fat supply must start feeding his addiction immidiately to stay AT normal weight. In other words, you dio not survive by being in good shape, you survive by carrying your food reserve around your middle. What you have there will outlast what you can carry in your mollie pack.

You burn more energy carrying the pack than you can carry in the pack.

I have scientific proof that I am right. Every weight loss program in the world will comfirm my findings as will the doctors that treated the jews in the Warsaw Getto and the concentration camps of WW2 and Doctors that treat anorexia today.

My shelter and sustanance is in place. I am going no where. I will tote no barge and lift no bale. I have nothing in the "necessary to build" column at this point. SHTF I will amble along as I have for the receint past. If I see food I will harvest it, but I will not chase it. Any battle I fight will be from where I stand and the attacker will give up more than calories.

I would be willing to bicycle the 2.5 miles to the little crossroads if they have icecream after SHTF, but only occasionally.

My training consists of getting plenty of sleep, taking lots of Alieve to fight off the aches and pains of old age, not forgetting to take my other necessary meds and spending lots of time at the range walking back and forth to the 100 yard berm.

If you didn't bring jerky what did I just eat?

I thought the reason was McDonald's.

Won't that little ice cream truck that plays songs come by after SHTF? This is so depressing.

I've actually been wanting to get back into some sort of fitness routine.

I have a severally herniated disk with a major impingement on my spinal cord. So, I have to figure out what I can do that won't aggravate that.

I'll was doing the Crossfit WOD for awhile. Actually what I could. That is a brutal workout. I was climbing at a rock wall gym. I have a free weight gym at home. I used to love to go heavy. I also used to run quite a bit. I have an elliptical but that sucks. I have a real bike and hate stationary bikes. LOL

My great shape weight is about 220lb and I am at 240 right now. But, I haven't worked out or really watched my weight in a couple of years now.

Anyone with a simular back problem got a good routine.

That is why I like the slider so much. It keeps my back straight and pulling rather than decompressing spine. Sit ups can be done inclined in either direction to make them harder or easier. It sounds odd but strenghthening stomach helps back. Squats done on incline with back laying flat is perfect to align hips and lower back. Pull ups on slider decompress and align upper back. I work both arms and legs together to maintain symetry. The hardest thing to do is keep the gut off with a bad back because keeping back straight is the key to a pain free life. There are only two things I have found that work well. Kayaking and shoveling dirt (I use a small shovel head). Gentile repeditive twisting is good. Short excercises with a lot of weight build bulk but full range of motion, a lot of reps builds much more useful muscle. Diet is the best way to control weight. I you need to gain strenght lots of excercise and steak and eggs 5 times a day. To loose weight eat small meals slowly. My knowledge of this may be dated. I was very athletic in my youth involved in Judo and Biathlon but that was 25 years ago. How to take care of a bad back has been developed every since.

Have you tried TAEBO? It is one hell of a work out. You should not have unreaonable expectations from any martial art. In a fight everything counts, physical condition, skill, speed, strenght, guns, chains, knives, it all counts and martial arts is just one factor. It will not make you invinceable. Women are so much weaker than men the tactic should be to catch them by surprize and break free to run. Unlikely you would win if you stand and fight. Get in a few good licks and run like hell. Running is a very good self defense move. People need to remember what they see on television is not real and meant to fulfill your fantasies. Goes for survival shows also.

If you are just sitting around on your butt all the time you are already dead. That is not living.

But if you are lost or something and expecting rescue, I think circumstances would dictate how you react, whether you save your energy or not, I was looking at the post as a short term survival situation. It makes perfect sense that a person with the most body fat could survive the longest without food, Just like a bear,, They survive on body fat all winter.

If starvation was the only danger you faced that might be true. It would be better to carry 50 pounds of food than to be 50 pounds over weight.

One little thing that came to my mind.

What use is the conserved energy if you don't really use it? I don't see the point to use the energy for conserving it. I believe in using minimal energy to get things DONE. That is still doing and you need physical capabilities to DO things. Hence finding a good balance on your physical fitness should be the goal.
