Firesteel/flint & steel, without flint!

I have been thinking on firesteel type of firemaking system, for practically free... The obvious flint & steel is not an option as flint is not naturally found anywhere in the country. So, you people have any clue and/or experience on creating a firesteel / flint & steel replacement from scratch?

Thank you Crash and Rick. Quartz is plentiful here, but of the pentlandite I'm not sure of.. I'm going to test out both suggestions.

Well, the quartz does give a spark with a knife, but not very good one. I need to practice on that one to really know if I can make fire with it. Can't find pentladite anywhere...
