The class distinction, unfortunately, has almost always been there. There was a time in this country's beginning that a man of wealth could hire someone else to serve in his place or pay into a fund that would hire soldiers to serve. Again so the man of wealth didn't have to.
Altruistic feelings aside, conscription can only appeal to those who make less money than the military pays. That's rarely a son or daughter of a wealthy person since they already have more money than they can make in the service.
While we would like to think otherwise, WWI and WWII stood as good examples of that class distinction where those with money very often went to the service as an officer.
No conflict is more of a gritty reminder of class distinction than Viet Nam, however. Those that had, didn't and those that didn't have, had to.
Again, there are a lot of reasons a person would choose to join the military not the least of which is pride or patriotism. That is NOT what this post is about. It is about the class distinction the Col referenced in the article.
It was a well writtin article, in my opinion.
