Full Curve or Half Curve Carving Knife

I plan on trying to making a couple of spoons and possibly bowls. Which would you think would be the easiest to use as a newbie or would you go ahead and get both? Also, because of the curve, I'm guessing there isn't a specialized sheath for them so how would you store them. I don't have a shop or shelves to store them, so most of my knives get sheathed and laid in a bag. And when it come time to sharpen the edges, what would you use, a dowel rod with sandpaper?

My Bro who carries a curved knife carries it in a leather drawstring pouch.

Get them both.

I have neither types so I just burn concave shapes.

i would recommend a crooked knife with a heavily curved tip, like these:

basically, a "baggy" sheath of supple leather works fine.
i haven't gotten the hang of sharpening the ones with the bevel on the inside of the curve, but that's basically exactly what i have been doing; round tool handle with 800 and 1500 grit paper.

I started with a $5 hoof trim knife from the tack shop and still use if for a majority of my work. I made a big case much like youwould keep eyeglasses in and put a top fold cover and snap on it.

It stays in the camp gear because that is when I use it most, while sitting around camp with nothing to do. I wind up making spoons and small bowls from slabs of firewood. I do a lot of demonstration camps and sitting around making utensils is a good skill for that purpose. It usually gets you a good location in camp too.

I sharpen mine with round ceramic rods. The edges take very little abuse because this is a knife that is used as a knife and not a miricle monkey wrench. Not much chance of it being batoned, prybared, chiseled or mistaken for a screwdriver. The edge will only need a touch up now and then, espically if you get the Mora.

You can wrap a piece of 400 or 800 grit sandpaper (depending on how aggressive you need to be) around a wooden dowel to sharpen the blade.

Once its sharp or while it's sharp from the factory, you can glue a piece of leather onto a wooden dowel and use it as a strop to keep the curved blade sharp. Strop it often. Don't wait until it's hard to cut with or you'll have to use the sandpaper.
