Default A little late, but hi

Hi everyone. My name is Blake. I am 27 years old and pretty much grew up in the woods. Hunting and camping were always great bonding times for me and my dad and I always looked forward to it. That is what got me interested in the wilderness as a whole. When I got married, I got my wife into camping as well and about 4 years ago, we took to backpacking. I have a small level of military survival experience as well, but most of what I know came from growing up in the woods. As a backpacker, I want to continuously progress (regress?) towards carrying less and staying longer. As time goes on, I am getting more and more into the survival aspect (I think it's important to know as a backpacker). What I'm currently trying to learn:

Making cordage (Twining looks exactly like making a Flemmish twist bowstring).

Edible wild plants (trying to get past "This is edible, this is not" and actually learn how to use it).

Knapping (It just looks like fun)

A lot of my questions/reading will probably be related to these things but I'm a curious person and have a lot more questions too.

    Thanks,
    Blake

Welcome aboard Blake. Don't let the grouchy guys run you off. Most of them want to cuddle in the tent after dark and are just checking to see if you are a-scared.

Seriously, relax, have fun and roll with the punches, lots of great information and a great place to bounce things around.

I used to enjoy making bowstrings but I haven't done it in a while. We'll see if I can do it using natural fibers rather than store-bought string.

Welcome to the Wolf-Pack; as you already know, they can be a "frisky" bunch; but don't let 'em get you down! Flaming is not allowed here & if any Mod sees it we shut it down. You've shown me something that I like to see in any outdoorsman, & that's sand! Also, I'm sure those outings with your father as well as your later activities stand you well in the "survival" arena. It's a known fact that those who are properly prepared with both equipment & knowledge very seldom get into a true survival situation. Add to that the fact that you've included your better half is very cool; solo hiking is a bit riskier & having someone you care about along to share your ventures with helps keep you from away from one of the 7 deadly enemies of survival: boredom/lonliness. Right now there are absent members who have accomplished much of what you want to learn & can help you learn it as well. FVR, Trax, & so on. The blog site has much information available also...enjoy!
