Boiling Water

I have put together a survival kit and at first it seemed like i had everything i needed. Then i decided to see if you actually can make a cup of of tinfoil to boil water and when i tried the water just all leaked out.

Did i do something wrong or is that tin foil as a pot thing just a myth. can someone give me help on how to form the pot? Or any suggestions on what to put in there as a substitute it has to be pretty small and light weight. I just am glad i tested it out before i actually needed it

If anyone has any info or advice that would be greatly appreciated.

It's not a myth. The heavier the foil the better, but even then you will not get many uses out of it. I would only consider this for emergencies. It's good that you tried it. If it is something you want in your kit, keep trying until it works for you. Try this --- do not make a cup with it, but rather a bowl. Do not fold any seams into it, just a depression that will hold water. If you make seams, it will (as you know) leak. For a lightweight option that works every time and does not cost a lot, try a metal canteen cup.

I use a Tuna fish Can. I use tuna fish cans because the are easy for me to clean, as they (that I buy) come packed in water. With the "Side-cutter" can opener, there is no sharp edge.

I noticed at my local surplus store that stansport has an aluminum canteen cup. It is probably half the weight of the stainless ones. They are also pretty cheap ($4). I might pick up a few and try them out against my stainless one.
Here is a cup I bought for less than $2 at walmart. It works pretty good.

yh i found a pewter one around my house and i put it in there but i realized that it melts at around 570 degrees so im slightly worried about that. are there any collapsible cups or bowls or something like that? cause the cups have those big handles and in general are a bit bulky for a survival kit

I like this cup that fits over a Nalgene bottle. PGVOutdoors, also a Scoutmaster, turned me onto this. The handles fold over the body of the cup; it doesn't require much pack space:

I like that bottle, nice idea with the cups. More weight but may be worth it.

They also make an aluminum foil baking pan that would be even better in emergencies. You can fold it down flat for your kit. Since it's designed for baking it's quite a bit heavier. The small one is the one I'm referring to. It's for a mini loaf.

I like the canteen cup, too. You can always store something inside it...like a canteen to hold water.

Filled with liquid, it is pretty heavy. My idea when getting them was for short little hikes and sharing a nice cup of hot chocolate with whomever joined me.

The colapsable cups are nice but they will warp if you use them over the fire.

If you are looking for light and cheap start hunting for cans that meet the size requirements. Several standard size veggie cans will snuggle up to a throw away water bottle or soda bottle.

I spent 2 months on the AT with a 1 pound coffee can and a large spoon as my only cooking/eating gear.

I bought a brushed aluminim water bottle at the Dollar Store last weekend for $3. At the end of summer you start seeing those deals.

Sometimes you have to get out of the camping section and hunt through the kitchen gear to find what you need.

I wouldn't do it anyway, aluminum foil is not good for your body. =) What I would do is use the tin foil and glue to three flat boards of the same size (15 inches or so) and then use that to redirect the sun from three angles to boil your water in a stainless steel cup. Then you have something you can use over and over again and take where ever you go.

Or use this as an examples to make your own variation of a solar cooker.
