Thread: What can you do with your knife?

Default What can you do with your knife?

This topic has continued under different threads to what I am sure would set some kind of record. There is only one way to settle it. Can a person survive with just a knife? Which knife is the best? Show us what you can do with it and only it. Batoning? If you can build a log cabin that way then do it. Post pictures. I'm not as into knives as most of you but I do see thier usefulness. I am partial to having a saw blade built into my knife. Mainly for being able to shape wood and get a square cut. I will make my point this way. I have a saw blade on most my knives or a saw packed with them. I use this machete with a saw on back of blade to make a fire drill and only this machete. I have since bought a smaller one that could do the same job.

I was able to chop wood flat to make fire board. Tip of blade was used to start hole and saw side of blade to cut groove.

Saw blade was also used on end of bow. Natural cordage I use is more difficult to work with so I sawed a groove in the end of bow and just tie a knot in the cordage to hold it in place.

Hand thing that holds spindle was a small piece of wood sawed and the hole started with tip of blade.

I have a saw blade on a skining knife that I keep with my ultralight gear because of it's light weight which could perform this same task.

I am not like those that would intentionally head off onto the woods with just a knife nor do I get into brand names instead looking to features it has such as a saw blade but for the sake of arguement I am going to use a Swiss Army Soldiers knife that also has a saw blade.

This is a new knife for me that I have not used yet but I have had other Swiss Army knives and after all it is a tool and I have worked with my hands all my life. I will make the claim it is the best survival knife in the world and as time allows I will be using it and posting pictures of what it can do. I see these kinds of debates go on in every topic and I am of the belief it is the hand that holds it that makes all the difference whether it be knives, guns or anything else. I put this challenge out to show us what you can do with just a knife. Are you guys having any of it?

I thought you might be interested to know the Sog Revolver was designed by one of the members here.

I open about 120 bags of concrete per month with my knife, and use it to sharpen the carpenters pencils, and for making peanutbutter & Jelly samwiches.

I do hope you clean it between tasks!

I was half way through making a samich one time and realized I still had possom blood on my knife!

Battoning? Isn't that what the half naked girls at the front of the marching band do?

I honestly have no idea how many times a day my knife comes out. I use it for stripping wire, opening boxes, cutting straps, sharpening pencils, etc, etc. Every underground primary wire that I have ever worked on has been spliced or terminated with the blade on my side and not the specialty tools that we carry around.

I've started plenty of fires off the back of the spine with my firesteel, made countless repairs on the side of the road (fuel lines, electrical, stuff like that), turned many pairs of pants into shorts or swim suits, cut lots of rope...all kinds of stuff.

Then there is food prep. Both in the kitchen and in the field. Last year, my knife went through 2 moose (mine and another hunter's) and 4 deer (again, mine and another hunter's) along with dozens of grouse and a few duck.

They are a very valuable tool and one that I never leave home without. I have lots of other tools that I use with great frequency but none that go with me everyday.

Great thread A.S.! Cant wait to see what others have to say!

Also, that same knife is the one that John D. McCann mentions that he carries as his 'folder' in his book: "Build The Perfect Survival Kit."

As to what I can do with my knife? It should read "Knives," as I have many different blades for many different jobs, so let me just answer thusly: "A whole buncha stuff!"

I doubt many of us here ascribe to the "one knife at a time" rule.

I have an SAK on my key chain, my money clip hides a utility blade and I always have a small general purpose lock blade clipped to the pocket.

And the Jeep is a mobile knife shop. The last time I cleaned it out there were about a dozen assorted blades rattling around on the floor.
