Default Trip To The Zoo (pic heavy)

I've been itching to get out and do some hikes, but I'm not quite ready for trails and uneven terrain (soon though). I have not been to a zoo in probably 20 years - and now I realize why. I am really conflicted about the zoo. It is pretty cool to see all the different animals that I would not otherwise be able to see. The number of school children on field trips that were learning about all of the different animals, and hopefully gaining a bit more respect for them was encouraging. Growing up, and going to the zoo was a family thing, and we always had a good time. The trips were very infrequent, but always enjoyable. The conflicted part comes from seeing so many of the animals that seem to have their spirit broken. Granted, it was a very hot day today. All of the animals seemed to be well cared for, but for some of them it just appeared that they had resigned themselves to living in captivity. I know that some were born to captivity and that is all that they know, but somehow that part of the zoo experience just bothered me. I took about 250 pictures, so I guess in a sense I'm a bit hypocritical about it. Just made me think more than I had thought it would before I went today. I'll post some of the pictures throughout this thread, and a couple of others.

I agree with you, crash. Once in a blue moon, I'll go to the zoo. I enjoy seeing animals, close up, but I always end up feeling very sorry for them, and end up pretty sad, by the time I leave.

Great pics, Crash. Thanks. The up side is most of those animals will live longer and healthier lives than they would in the wild. And for some, they provide a gene pool to ensure their specie continues on even as their numbers dwindle in the wild.

You know it's going to be a bad morning when you wake up in the woods, feel something on your chest, open one eye and the first thing you see is...

I don't get the chance to see Bald Eagles too often down in Florida. They are a pretty incredible animal.

    Thanks Crash, very touching shots.
The bald eagle makes me sad (esp. that second shot--he looks somehow defeated) perhaps because I always think of him as soaring or sitting high on some perch. Irrational really, but there it is.

The pics also make me think about how special each of these species are and what a tremendous loss it would be if any one of them disappeared.

We generally buy a family zoo membership for a year. That way we can go for 2 hours and leave, and not feel bad about not getting our monies worth. When you have a bunch of little kids, sometimes 2 hours is all you can take.

Thanks Crash. That was enjoyable. I share your feelings about the purpose of a zoo. On one hand it is great they are there and on the other hand why are these animals locked up. Most of the zoo animals have mental problems (i am not making this up) and there is just no way that they can ever be released in the wild again. So, both the humans and the animals are stuck with eachother. I think that zookeepers realize that and that's why the more modern zoos are more open and (if possible) gageless. I don't think that it is hypocritical though to take pictures. Why would it be?
