Good post OLY. Stuff like that is one of the reasons we keep a full stocked BOV. Ya' never know when_____________________________. BOV's/ BOB's there not just for tshtf any more. LOL

BOB = Bug Out Bag
BOV = Bug Out Vehicle

Basically a bag or vehicle that you have stocked that you can gab and get away from a danger that may exist, and have some supplies to survive.

A good post Oly. Here's a map of nuclear reactors in the US. As you can see, most are over 30 years old. We have an amazing safety record in the US but one accident could be a huge event. Remember that prevailing winds are generally west to east. Can someone move Illinois for me?

Look at the one in the lower southeast corner of Alabama. That is about 30 miles due west of me. We drive by it when we go shopping (which is now rare). It also happens to be one of the 30+ year old ones.
Makes me rethink just how safe I would be in My BOL which is southeast of here. I'm not sure that if it did blow up, there would be any chance for us to escape. I think we are just too darn close to ground zero.
Our prevailing winds are from the southwest to northeast most days.

What is the blast radius of one of these things?

The threat of an accidental release such as occurred at Three Mile Island is always a real concern. There are two “emergency planning zones” in the event of an accident. One zone covers an area within a 10-mile radius of the plant, where it is possible that people could be harmed by direct radiation exposure. The second zone covers a broader area, usually up to a 50-mile radius from the plant, where radioactive materials could contaminate water supplies, food crops, and livestock.

The facility's emergency response plan must be discussed and agreed upon by the organization operating the power plant, by local and county emergency response officials, and by state emergency management officials. The plan is then reviewed by the NRC for adequate on-site preparedness, and by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), for adequate offsite preparedness. If you live within the 10 mile radius then Potassium Iodide is a real need. You should contact your local officials and request a copy of the preparedness plan and if PI is available to you and your family. The Nuclear Regulatory Commission included funding for PI to be included in the response plans.

Citizens living near a nuclear power plant must be advised periodically of the procedures that will be used to notify them of a problem at the facility and the actions that citizens should take if protective measures (such as evacuation or sheltering) are required. In general, a system of sirens (or tone-alert radios) will be activated within the 10-mile emergency planning radius to advise citizens to listen to local radio or television announcements for information and safety instructions. Arrangements must be made in advance for evacuation route planning, for reception and care of evacuated persons, and for special situations, such as the safe transport of school children or hospital patients out of the area.

In addition to the coordinated facility, local, and state emergency plans, Federal agencies have plans in place to coordinate their response activities and share their resources in support of state and local officials during an emergency. Coordination activities include joint planning and training sessions and exercise participation.

Last I heard the average in my area Via highway,river,and rail. All within 10 miles of me and a major rail yard less than a mile from me. Is about 4,209 units Thats rail containers, barge containers,truck loads DAILY.
