    Default Home Made Gun Cleaner

Keeping your fire arms in top shape is pretty easy if you make it a habit of cleaning them after each use. Depending on where you live or how much disposable income you have it may not be a simple thing to just run to town and pick up some gun cleaner. If that's the case, you can make your own.

Some may know the name C.E. "Ed" Harris. He's a pretty well known writer about guns. He developed a cleaner based on an old Frankford Arsenal formula. Here is "Ed's" Red gun cleaner.

I have some of this that was mixed up by a fellow muzzle-loader, as it worked pretty good on BP rifles as well as modern.
Sounds like the same formula.......It will last a long time, but acetone seems to evaporate.

As you start with a 1 gal can, it would pay to get together with a couple other guys, split the cleaner and cost, so it doesn't go bad.

Yes, acetone will evaporative very quickly. It can also pass through porous containers as well. Acetone is the base mixed with acetylene for pressurized tanks. You can't pressurize acetylene safely so they mix it with acetone. The acetylene is dissolved into the acetone. So it's a pretty powerful solvent.

Thanks Rick! I've heard of this before, but never had the recipe. Our local True Value has all of the ingredients on the shelves. The ATF, Acetone, Lanolin, mineral spirits and K1. I'm not sure about the CAS #64741-49-9, or substitute "Stoddard Solvent", CAS #8052-41-3, or equivalent. but I'll check it out.

I was at a friends house, one day, while he was cleaning some guns. (We had just returned from shooting.) I asked what he was using, and he told me "gas and motor oil.....'bout half and half." That's what his father had taught him to use. It's what his grandfather had used, also.

He was very sloppy with it, and used it to clean inside and out. When he finished, he just wiped the guns off with a semi dry rag.

I wanted to laugh, but I've seen some of his grandfathers guns, that he now has. They are in perfect condition. (Shrug.)
