Last night I was making a quick run in to Eagle River. At the intersection just before getting on the hwy I spotted a piece of steel laying in the road and picked it up. It is a 14" OREGON chain saw bar 1/8" thick. It has about 8 1/2" x 1 1/2" of useable knife making steel it it.

Now to come up with a new design.

After 36 years, my wife has almost gotten use to me stopping for tools in the road. Almost. I've explained how vitally important it is to the war effort, how men are genetically programmed to do these things, how unsafe it is to just drive by and leave tools laying in the road like that and how those tools represent cash money that she would surely stop and pick up if she saw it laying there. It doesn't matter. She just doesn't grasp the concept.

But good for you, brother! I'm glad to see the effort is national in scope. It's good to know that even in the far flung corners of this great land men stop to retrieve lost tools.

I'm thinking making it 8" overall. Gonna try my hand at making some canvas Micarta for the handle.

Well I cut into the bar today. It is 3 pieces of thin steel laminated together by spot welding. It is no good for any kind of blade. I guess I'll have to wait for another piece of steel to come along my way.

If anyone wants to use the knife design as usual its ok with me.

Well I quite honestly thought this thread was about something completely different when I saw the title, but heck yeah, chain saw bar should make a great knife I would think. You just go ahead and make one off of that design you just showed us you little knife making fairy, you.

too thin for slicing knives even? how about fillet knives, or kitchen knives?

i know that's awful thin, but maybe there's some good use.
