    Default On Thin Ice!

It only took a split second for the ice to break and the snowmachine to fall through into the creek. It took several hours to get it out of the hole it was in.

We had come to a bad place on the creek so I made a really good decision to turn around and go back. (We were roughly 20 miles from the trail head). I got the clients off the machines and had them walk back up the creek a ways. I then started turning the machines around.

The first two were no problem. On the third one, as I was turning I heard a very loud cracking sound then I heard a loud "OH SH!T" come out of my mouth accompanied with short fall and an abrupt stop. Then it got very cold and wet all around me.

As suddenly as it happened it was over and I became very calm. I pulled out the "AK Bush Knife" and used it to chip hand holds in the ice so I could crawl out.

It was supposed to be an easy day.

p.s. No I didn't build a fire to dry out or anything else. I put the clients on the remaining machines and guided them back to the trail head. I then returned to the stuck machine and worked it out of the hole then towed it back to the trail head. I went home, took a hot shower and went to bed.

Most times a calm head can stop a "survival situation" before it gets a chance to rear its ugly head.

Sorry for the lack of pictures. I was otherwise occupied.

Hey, close call there, Bud, funny how fast "stuff" happens, glad to hear you are still surviving.
Another reminder that you never know, you can prepare for a lot of stuff, be careful etc, but still need that little bit of help watching over you.
    Thanks for sharing.

Glad you're ok, Kevin. **It happens. One time I was setting a pump in place on a creek and the guy carrying the other end of the pump let go, 400 pound pump & 180 pound me (back then lol) went through that creek ice like **It through a goose. I made a big splash at work that day.
some fella confronted me the other day and asked "What's your problem?" So I told him, "I don't have a problem I am a problem"

Glad you are OK. We had a machine roll into one of those deep narrow creeks up by Petersville. And it ended up in 4' of running water in a creek 4 1/2' wide and 8' up to solid snow. It was my machine, completely under water, and about +10* above. We had to all get in the waist deep water and flip it end to end, then we were able to use three of the small folding come-a-longs that we each carry too get out. I sure learned the value of not riding alone.

The knife held up great. This morning I cleaned off the rust with some breakfree and a rag. That knife is really solid. It would have done alittle better if it had more of a point on it but other then that its a great knife.

Rust?! Rust?! See that? If that knife had been sent to me there would NOT have been rust on it. No sir. I take care of my trophies. But you just let her rust Mr. fall in the crick with your snowmobile.

The real reason you wouldn't have gotten rust on it is because you'd have to leave the comforts of your computer chair and actually go outside.
