Wood Gassifier Stoves

Hey CS - Take a look at Merriweather's journal. He used to be on here but I have not seen him on in a good while. He's pretty darn handy with making things and pretty knowledgeable about primitive skills and plants.

No it really isn't. The science behind it is as wood burns gasses are released. The stove has an inner burn chamber and an outer chamber surrounding it. As it heats up convection from the heat pulls the smoke in to the outer chamber from holes in the bottom of the inner chamber. When the gasses combine with heated oxygen in the outer chamber they rise out of the holes in the top of the outer chamber where they reignite. So now you have a wood fire and a wood gas fire. Very clean very efficient and very hot. I sure wish our minister of science would explain this stuff for us. I am just an ole country boy. But that is it in my best desciption.

Call me crazy, but how does that thing downdraft? It's looks to me like you'd pull the air in at the bottom and it would go straight up through the wood because the draft of the fire would create a vacuum beneath it. I can see some air being pulled up the side walls but not wood gas.

Rick,

If you look at mine the holes are above the coals or at about 1/3 of the total fire chamber from the bottom not in the bottom.

Yeah, I was just going by that diagram. It doesn't make sense to me but then again, I guess it doesn't have to.

Yeah,

When i was studying designs some had holes in the bottom some didn't. Holes in the bottom didn't make sense to me either. I will post pics soon showing the gasses clearly burning in mine.

I'm with you. You'd have to set up air flow above the base of the wood to draw the gas up to the top where you want it to burn. At least that's the way I see it in my head.

That diagram shows how I have always built mine. It is basically a copy of the bushbuddy design. There is also a magic ratio of inlet and exhaust area.

This is my attempt. It was done from a recipe from another site. It involves a one qt. empty paint can a progresso soup can which slides in perfectly from the bottom and a one qt coffee can on top for the room to add fuel and cook on. The top can stores inside the bottom and the paint can lid seals the stove debris in travel.
