I don't think the gasses produced by burning wood are the same as those produced by wood under high temps that are not allowed to burn. Isn't the idea of wood gasification to produce a fuel (think propane) to power an internal combustion engine or a gas stove? Maybe I'm wrong - I haven't done it, and haven't studied it extensively. Looking forward to what you end up with. Either way, it's a cool looking set-up you've got.

Right, it generates gases that are immediately burned and not stored. Benefits are a more efficient burn (less wood required) and when working correctly won't sute up pots. I have even read where they are used indoors. Getting the venting and gas nozzles perfect is key though. I am not there yet but am making it completely adjustable now. More to come!

I was thinking the same as Crash. What's the difference between a hobo stove and a gasifier stove? It still hasn't clicked for me. I see the 2 stage air intake but I still don't get it.

As I understand a hobo stove it is just fire in a can with air coming in from the bottom...There is no inner chamber. This uses convection (heat) to pull gasses from the base of the fire and reintroduces the gas to the flame front creating a gas fire at the top of the stove. Working correctly the gas flames will even be blue. It really has to all be perfect though...that is why I am making everything adjustable as we speak.

I thought you were also talking about generating the gas and then burning it, as in the MEN vehicles and power plant.
The way you are is burning the wood, kinda twice, is supposed to be how my Quadra-Fire wood stove burns, with a secondary heat exchanger.

I made a burner spacer and an adjustable air intake...a little water in the bottom can will make it safe to burn on surfaces. Also making the pot....it is really a stainless bowl....moded with a wire removable handle. More to come!

Kind of tested your above theory the other night and it just hit me that it was what I was doing. I tried to gassify 4 charcoal briquets and guess what? Ah, no gassification, I am guessing this is why charcoal burns rather clean because it has already gassed off during production.

Great stove CS. I made one that size and it worked great. When I made a smaller one, it didn't. I used a coconut milk can as the outer and a tomato sauce as the inner. I think it was too narrow and deep for proper gassification. It did gassify, but eventually went out, and I could add any fuel or it went out. The one I made with a monster can as the outer and an asparagus can as the inner worked a lot better. But, I thought it was too big for my needs, so I ditched the whole idea. So, my only recommendation would be to not make it too small. But since I am late on this thread, it looks like you are not in need of any advice. Again, good job.

No. not really. A kelly kettle has a fire inside a chamber and heats water that is directly in line of the exhaust. But, in the end, it is still just a basic fire burner. A gasifier is different.
