Check your dictionary. Existing and Being are synonyms. Just like me and I.

I don't even know how to respond to that. Color your world any way you wish.

WOW YOU GUYS ARE DEEP...This is going to sound simple minded but I believe its the fairness aspect of mother natue that pulls on our very being. She does not care if you are tall, short, fat, skinny, weak or strong. She will nurture you if you ask,she will shelter you if you ask,she will feed you if you ask.You just have to know how to ask.And who can ignore someone who has always been fair to you.

Whether it hits me in the head or not, it still exists. It has a state of being. My own cognizance of its state is irrelevant. An inanimate being is still something that exists.

You may not be governed by the dictionary but it is the set of rules by which we communicate. Without it we might as well be grunting and pointing. Synonym by any other name means the same (get it? That's a pun).

I see a difference between "to exist", and "to be".

Does a rock and a whale "exist" ? Or is it that they "are" ?
To be, one does not need to be observed by anyone...neither us nor other beings.
To exist is different because it expresses a representation...an idea.
    We exist in reflections.

In the concept of reality, and from a point of view of existence, the possibilities are endless...for this reflection can create images and beliefs as wild as it is permitted, and therefore create a reality not bound by the laws of "being".
It is the difference between the notion of existing in a representation...an idea (to exist), and the notion of matter...to be.

    Without our eyes...the rock is.
With our eyes...the rock is small, heavy, black, sharp, round...etc.
The philosophical concept of the article is existentialism; not the different ideas about "to be or to exist". The path of the arguments, in my view, between the two are irrelevent. The doctrine of existentialism is based on that existence takes precedence over essence and holds that man is totally free and responsible for his acts, and that this responsibility is the source of the dread and anguish that encompass him.

remy; The doctrine is based on existence not on "to be" which is another line of thought (which I do not care to discuss on this thread) which has three unrelated stems (be, become and occur) and does not apply to this topic.

    Default My philosophy

Philosophising ain't good for much when there's wood that needs splitting. It exists in big round logs, take an ax and keep swinging until it exists in a bunch of split logs or philosophize til ya freeze to death..

    Talking Figure this...

So answer me this, braniacs....If a Hippopotamous' hollow tooth is as long as a Rhinocerous' intellect, how long would it take a mosquito wearing rubber hip boots to shingle an out-house with potato chips?(five extra points if you can figure out how much longer it would take it to hang a door on it! )

It would take three root beers (plus or minus an olive). With the door, a quart of oil.
