    Default Alaskan Survivalist Introduction

I hope I get this right, I'm not great with computers and already made the mistake of posting without introducing myself which I thought was not mandatory so I guess I have a little trouble reading too. I make no claim to being overly smart so I just copied intro stuff and will answer each one.

    Your Approximate Age - 55

    Your Gender - male

Your Geographic Location (small town in West Virginia, family ranch in Texas, or the “the Lower East Side”) - Butte , Alaska

Your Occupation (present and relevant past, such as military, technical, etc.) - Currently a truck driver and have been a Teamster for 35 years but started working young and did many jobs through out the years but as I have gotten older I pretty much stick with driving truck. My father was commercial fisherman and I spent a lot of time sleeping next to a D8 Caterpillar motor so nothing lulls me to sleep like the sound of a loud diesel so I avoid line driving. To many skills to list but mostly construction related, everything from plumbing to heavy equipment.

Your Prior Relevant Training (all types, such as first aid, military, firearms, survival, etc.) -
OJT mostly. Once I learned mechanics it opened the doors to everything else. I never gratuated high school. I went to flight school but could never or will ever be able to avord a plane so that was a waste of time. I played Judo about 4 hours a day, 4 days a week, for 8 years. At this level it became a holistic approach which effects extended far beyond the dojo.

The Nature of Your Prior Experience (Terrain, Season, Number of times/years, and longest duration in Wilderness) - I grew up on a homestead in Kachemak bay. The real kind that you clear, plant and evelop to recieve patent for 160 acres from the Territory. I guess it depends what you call wilderness. I prospected for gold a lot, years at a time. More than half my life was spent off road system without electricity but usually with a small town within 20 miles. Now I live on the road system with all the conveniences but step out my back door and it's wilderness for hundreds of miles.

Your Level of Experience (novice, intermediate, advanced, expert, instructor, etc.) - I never got rated. I think you have to go to some kind of school for that so what ever is below novice would be me.

Your Preparedness Planning (type and level) - A little different from most. I have had some ups and downs in my life and had to start over several times so I try to be prepared to start over. I am getting older so I really don't want to do it again so I have tried to make myself as secure as possible in my current life.

Your Interests and Hobbies (gardening, wilderness skills, urban survival preparation, knife-making, firearms, food storage, backpacking, etc. ) - I have done most things to death and it's just things I do. I still get out weekly and either hike, ski or snow shoe for fun. I camp around in the summer as a side effect of other things I like to do and when the weather is nice Ilike that to. I like fishing and find peace spending my days trying to think like a fish.

Your Membership and Learning Objectives - I don't much care for people and with the exception of my wife I prefer the company of a good dog. People are a plaque on the earth and I figure I should learn more on how people think to be able to deal with lays ahead. Population increases are begining to encroach on my life at levels that cannot be ignored. I don't figure to post much but made a post and I guess broke protocal so hope this makes it right.

Welcome to the forum. I hope we hear a lot about the early Homer Homestead experiences. I had a small drag race team, and spent some HOT Sundays at the Valley Raceway. "Thunder in the Valley" Wow, that was a long time ago.

I live far enough from the strip I seldom hear it but when I do I head down there. When the sound fills the whole vally for about 5 seconds you know the big boys are there. I spent a few years around Hope in the 80's and have some pretty good stories about that place. Is "Rusty" still around thinking he's the town sheriff?

Everytime you Alaska guys talk about travelling around your state, I have to keep things in perspective.

Newport, R.I. is about 20 minutes from my front door, and the drive can be a pain in tourist season. And then I remember that Alaska is 423.56 times the size of Rhode Island.

Travel is something that is changing and I have to adapt to. The nearest good halibut fishing is 200 miles away. Indians in the area used to travel 20 to 30 miles in a day to gather food. One of those things I have been working on.

Welcome home. The intro isn't mandatory but it sure is nice to learn something about who you're talking to. If you ask a question now, we know you're not a 14 year old and that your question is legit. I'm sure you understand how that works.

Mid 50s is a great age, by the way. Just great!!

Yeah I know. I'll be 30 this year and am already wondering where the time has gone. My body feels about 60 though.

If you feel like you're 60, you must be "abusing yourself."

You know I always thought it was because I was a lumberjack for all those years. But now I think that job actually kept me healthier. For my job now I do nothing but sit all day, and I'm more tired and sore than I ever was. I can't wait to get back to a real job.

Okay, let me explain this another way.

Can't think of another way, unfortunately.

EDIT: Nice, Rick. The least you could do is leave your fingerprints when you edit.
