A beach walker called in a stranded seal this afternoon at a local beach.I was at a birthday party with the fire chief when the call came in and was asked if i wanted to lend a hand.We were to meet up with a someone who was trained to handle such things.
The specialist turned out to be my friend Many.I knew he went to help out the animals after Katrina but did not know he was also involved with the New England Aquarium's stranding program. It took the three of us to get the seal into the crate for transport. We loaded the crate into a trailer that was pulled by the fire departments 4wheeler for the four hundred yard trip to the beach.
We think the seal got himself stuck so far from the ocean by following one of the rain swollen tributaries.Once the rain stopped he was lost and couldn't find his way back to open water.
This was a great experience that I will not forget
