    Default protein-powder vs meat

so we had a round about with this a while ago but.
allot of folks look down on vegetarians, lots of jokes about peta- you know eating tasty animals, but lets leave the extemists out of this, lets look at it from a survival point of veiw.
i store at least 3 months worth of protein powder 100 grams a day easy with just water if need be, that goes along way to keeping you engine running especially with all the hard work you will need to be doing to survive, need to rebuild those muscles
now our ferocious hunters here will say naw just eat meat, but honsetly years and years of listening to guys at work talk about fishing all weekend and only one fish or hunting all week and no moose, what about trapping? sure but do you know how? what about the cycle of life in animals some years lots of rabbits some years no rabbits, its about a 10 year cycle.
for me if i can hunt, fish, trap extra meat then great but i will take any and every advantage that i can which means a few months worth of protein powder stored.
look at it from the economic value, how much meat can you buy for 30 dollars, probably not tow or three weeks worth i can guarantee but a small bucket of powder goes along way, and ya don't need no elecricity or fuel to keep and prepare it.
    think about it

good list and i stock allot of canned fish, small and portable easy to store, but imagine storing allot of that meat when the power goes donw and its 100 degrees or so, now the 3 month supply of meat you had is gone, i have seen it before me i'll place my bet on the powder

That stuff is for buggin' in. It's all cooked, ready to eat cold out of the can, and will store well for over 10 years.

As far as bugging out goes, there are only so many people and so many things you can fit into any vehicle - even Sarge's bus or Soldier's tractor-trailer. If you travel heavy you go slow and attract unwanted attention from people who want what you have. "Lean and Mean" is my bug-out motto.

    Default Great post we!

As a vegetarian (10+yrs) I give a lot of thought to protein and ways to include it in my diet. Protein powder is a good supplement in general (body builders use it) but a must as a stored survival food item for all the reasons you outlined. It's also healthier than a lot of canned meat stuff.

Heck yeah! For bug out, powder is much better than canned anything. I don't have a single can in the bug-out bags or supplies. No complete MRE's either - too much bulk. MRE entrees, peanut butter and cheese packets, tuna and salmon pouches, oatmeal - yes to all. Not a single can of anything.

Aaarggh. Fake food. Blech. What's wrong with beans, eggs and cheese?

    • Egg, large - 6 grams protein
    • Milk, 1 cup - 8 grams
    • Cottage cheese, ½ cup - 15 grams
    • Yogurt, 1 cup – usually 8-12 grams, check label
    • Soft cheeses (Mozzarella, Brie, Camembert) – 6 grams per oz
    • Medium cheeses (Cheddar, Swiss) – 7 or 8 grams per oz
    • Hard cheeses (Parmesan) – 10 grams per oz
    • Tofu, ½ cup 20 grams protein
    • Tofu, 1 oz, 2.3 grams
    • Soy milk, 1 cup - 6 -10 grams
    • Most beans (black, pinto, lentils, etc) about 7-10 grams protein per half cup of cooked beans
    • Soy beans, ½ cup cooked – 14 grams protein
    • Split peas, ½ cup cooked – 8 grams
    • Peanut butter, 2 Tablespoons - 8 grams protein
    • Almonds, ¼ cup – 8 grams
    • Peanuts, ¼ cup – 9 grams
    • Cashews, ¼ cup – 5 grams
    • Pecans, ¼ cup – 2.5 grams
    • Sunflower seeds, ¼ cup – 6 grams
    • Pumpkin seeds, ¼ cup – 8 grams
    • Flax seeds – ¼ cup – 8 grams

Besides, I have a lot of freeze dried veges including beans and peas, powdered milk, powdered eggs, canned cheese and MREs.

I always have a couple of 4 lb containers of whey protein on hand. I never gave storing it in quantity much though, but probably should. Good idea.

great list rick, one that i am paying close attention to on a daily basis right now, and agree with all the seeds and nuts and beans, but what about after a few weeks , the first several items on your list will perish, thats why i like the dry stuff, easy to use, on a plus and negative tho , right now i am watching my fat count and allot of seeds and nuts have way too much fat, but great in a survival scenario

Those are the good fats, we. Gotta understand the diff.

    Think salmon, sardines, walnuts, almonds=GOOD
    steak, bacon, fries, donuts=Bad
    Just as a starting point.

    One of the best motivators.
Fear and money, running close second...(for me anyway)

Thanks WE, great suggestion. One of our big problems in stocking up is that my wife has a casein dairy allergy. Its hard enough to avoid dairy but casein is an additive in many prepared foods, its easy to miss reading labels. This would be a good source of protein considering her allergy. Its amazing how little dairy can mess up her digestion for days.
