    Default 5 minute food grab

yes thats right boys and girls, its saturday, which means ol wareagle is goona start a few threads cuz he was thinking all week at work, so yesterday at the grocery store iwas wondering, when(notice i didn't say if) the crapper hits the fan allot of us have stocked food, but if you had to hit the grocery store for final supplies what would you grab in 5 minutes cuz everyone else is cleaning it out?
now i have thought much about what pal posted and often call it the "milk bread and egg syndrome" but for me i would hit the seasoning isle hopefully with time to also put more rice and beans in the cart.
but think of how big the store is and from time in to time out you have only five minutes(minus check out as it will not exsist) just a curiosity factor, even if you are already stocked up this is just a mental exercise "if ya hadta) kind of question.
    thanks for playing along

Wareagle, no B.S. here, but my spice rack holds 105 different spices. I have at least 6 refills for each spice in the rack. I used to pay big bucks for them when I bought Durkee or McCormick in the supermarket, but now you can buy about 90 different Spice Supreme spices in larger bottles for 88 cents each at the discount stores. Seal 'em up and keep them dry, cool, and in the dark and they'll last for 10 years with little degradation in flavor or quality.

We have a discount chain up here called "The Christmas Tree Shops." They don't sell Christmas trees, but they have loads of bargains. I picked up 14 bottles of Durkee Saffron (every bottle they had) for a half a buck a bottle instead of the $18.95 it sold for in the supermarket. Each bottle contains an envelope of saffron weighing 0.06 ounces. Expensive stuff.

About the only stuff I'd stock up on are certain perishables, like milk, bread, eggs, and Entenmann's Chocolate Covered Donuts.

My freezers are loaded with meat and fish and butter and cheese and I have a ton of everything else, including powdered milk and flour and canned products for when the fresh stuff runs low.

Have you ever read about how they supply a submarine? I taught 'em how to do that.

    Good thread, WE.

I would head to the wine/beer Isle.

Ixney to perishables because if you loose power they will spoil very quickly.
I'd go for more of what I already have: long shelf milk, canned sardines/mackerels, tuna in pouches, high fiber crackers, walnuts & almonds, dried fruit, instant oatmeal & grits and stuff like that. H2O of course.
Everything else isn't a necessity in my life. I can happily exist on very little variety.

I have enough booze to last me 20 lifetimes.

As far as creamer goes, I used light cream in my coffee for years. And not the 2 tablespoon 60 calorie serving, either. More like 2 or 3 servings of cream to a cup. So I switched to using milk, but that didn't last long.

I recently tried the fat-free half-and-half. I have NO IDEA how they can possibly make a fat free half-and-half, but it tastes pretty darn close to light cream and I only use one serving per cup at 20 calories per serving. The most surprising thing is that I never liked regular half-and-half in my coffee, but the fat free version is pretty darn good.

Funny, I just rinsed out the Corona bottle I emptied last night. It's sitting with a couple of friends in the returnables bin.

I think I would grab as many batteries as I could handle type would not matter too much as They could be barter material. Matches and lighters, and bake mixes . If time was available after that , tobacco products, I would think of them as good barter also. I would treat the opportunity as a final "top it off" with an eye towards barter

If your looking for barter items, I'd suggest a stroll through the health and beauty aisle. Aspirin, stomach remedies, antiseptics, antihistamines, toothpaste, bandages, even soap - stuff like that will be in high demand.

Just remember that under normal circumstances, most supermarkets completely restock about 75% of their food inventory every three days. Many items, such as milk and meats, are restocked several times each day. High profit/slower sales items may sit on the shelves for months. It's all about sales and profit per foot of shelf space. Regardless, in normal times shelves would be mostly empty in 72 hours if they weren't restocked.

If the SHTF, that time-line would get a lot shorter.

That, and silly me forgot the TP!!!!! The better half of this outfit has decided that she will keep at least 2-3 cases ahead on the TP. No arguements here
