Unfortunately, that's not always the case. Indiana is an on demand state. No training of any kind is required. You don't even have to prove you know which end shoots. It's a tough call for sure. I don't want more government regulation but a firearm really doesn't belong in the hands of anyone untrained in their use. That's another reason I spend as much time at the range as I do.

Arrow New law allows loaded guns in national parks

New law allows loaded guns in national parks
But firearms must be allowed by state where park is located

Loaded guns will be allowed in Yellowstone, the Grand Canyon and other national parks under a new law that takes effect Monday. The law lets licensed gun owners bring firearms into national parks and wildlife refuges as long as they are allowed by state law.

I started my kids out young, first with dart guns then with BB guns. Always be aware where that gun is pointed at all times and never point that gun at another person at anytime and be aware of what is beyond that target before pulling the trigger taking in consideration of rickashay.

    IMO
Passing that law will remove a lot of potential felons from the mix.
Those that carry, will do it whether it's legal or not.

Those that get caught, and don't have a permit, will get prosecuted.
Those that do have a permit will move along.

Anyone that is being attacked by a what-ever, and can't defend themselves, will pay the price.
Anyone that does defend themselves, will have a better chance of living.

Personally I would rather be alive to argue my innocence.

I found it curious that it depends on what state a particular part of the park you were in,, Correct me if I am wrong, and I may be, But aren't National Parks all considered Federal Land ?

I wanted to join the Marines at 17, but I'm deaf in one ear & can't hear out of the other. The draft board classified me as "1-Y", which meant that I could only be called up for non-combative duties, but I never was. Bummer! I wanted to be a Marine, do my time in the 'Nam, kill people & burn their homes. But it never happened.

When I was but a wee tyke I always played "War" with my playmates. Sorta like "Ken" (Michael Richards) on "Fridays". We used Army surplus gear and all kinds of cool weapons. I carried a wood '03 Springfield training rifle that I'd use to go through the manual of arms. I had hand grenades that fired caps, a plastic 1911 Army Colt Automatic, A real helmet, web belt, Army 1st aid kit...etc.. I formed a squad & even gave out medals I made myself. The other kids all called me Sarge and I sewed Master Sargent stripes on my army shirt sleeves, but wore the Eagle, Globe, & Anchor of the Marine Corps. I have the temperment and the ability to get things done. I don't play around if somethings, IMO, is serious. Other than that, I'm really a big pussy-cat. In my spare time I'm a working Magician doing kids shows, and they love me! NOW DROP & GIVE ME 20 MAGGOT!!!!

BLM land has always followed State law. It's just the Federal Parks did not allow carry. Corps of Engineers, on the other hand, does not allow weapons of any kind even though they are federal. Go figure.

In Big Cypress there have always been people carrying. Its a remote area and you do bump into two legged predators that might want to take advantage of that.

There was an incident a while ago where someone was target shooting near camp. They were also drinking. So someone called the park ranger. The ranger came out and asked if anyone had any loaded firearms. When the guy said yes the ranger told him to put it in the tent.

Still can't take a gun into federal buildings though. Legally at least. Check stations and visitor stations and what not.
