I GAVE you the answer. Given the Judge's promise, and the convict's response, whichever sentence the Judge would have given would have required him to impose the other. The Judge had only 2 options: 4 years of 6 years, and either one would go to the other, like an endless loop. Or a Catch 22.

Okay, TED. Let's try this again..........

    THIS was the Riddle:

A convicted man was about to be sentenced. As he stood before the Judge for sentencing, the Judge stated, "You may make a statement to the Court before you are sentenced. If your statement is true, the Court will sentence you to a term of four years. If it is false, you will be sentenced to serve six years in prison."

    The man made his statement.

    The Judge set him free.

What did the convicted man say?

    THIS was the Answer:

The convict said "You will sentence me to 6 years."

HERE is the logic behind it all (and yes, it IS logical):

Part 1: What most people expect is that the convict will try to say something that is SOOOOO persuasive that the Judge, in an act of human compassion, sets him free. The reader expects that the Judge anticipates hearing a plea from the convict that contains allegations of fact that the Judge will later determine to be either true or false. After determining whether or not the convict told the truth or not, the Judge would impose a sentence of either 4 or 6 years.

This expectation of what the convict will try to do in his statement is nothing more than an assumption - an incorrect assumption. And that forms the basis of the riddle itself as well as the impossible situation the Judge then finds himself in with regard to sentencing.

Part 2: Remember that if the convict makes a true statement he will be given 4 years and if he makes a false statement he will be given 6 years.

If the convict's statement was true, the Judge would have had to sentence him to 4 years. Therefore, when the convict told the Judge that the Judge would sentence him to 6 years, he placed the Judge in a box, so to speak.

Part 3: The convict's statement could neither be true nor false UNTIL the Judge issued the sentence. If the Judge then gave the convict 6 years, THE JUDGE would have caused the convict's statement to become true. If the convict's statement was true, then the Judge promised to give the convict 4 years, not 6. And that would have made the convict's statement false.

So, in turn, the Judge would then have had to give the convict 6 years, which once again would have then made the statement true, requiring the Judge to give him 4 years. And so on, and so on, and so on.

Part 4: Either sentence the judge imposed would have made the convicts's answer true or false in such a way as to require the Judge to impose the OTHER sentence which would have then made the convict's statement change from true to false, or vice-a-versa, over and over again.

In other words, the Judge COULD NOT sentence him to EITHER 4 YEARS OR 6 YEARS WITHOUT THE JUDGE BREAKING HIS OWN WORD. Get it?

And since the Judge promised to impose one of only two possible sentences, and since both of those sentences became impossible to impose, the judge could NOT sentence him at all without breaking his own word to the convict.

Conclusion: Therefore, the Judge's only option was to set the convict free, so that the convict could then run for office and get elected to Congress.

    Everybody get that?

    TED?

    TED, YOU S.O.B!

It took me 45 minutes (speed typing ) to answer your question. I figured that you probably wouldn't be able to sleep until I did.

And AFTER I typed for 45 minutes and clicked on the "Submit Reply" icon, what did I find? THAT YOU LOGGED-OFF, TED , that's what I found!

Ted, if you went to bed while I was typing that explanation, God help me, I hope that at this very second a spring pops out of your mattress and pokes you right in the @ss and keeps you up all night, TED!
