    Default Name that woodpecker

Alright you outdoors men and ladies. I took this picture in my back yard and it actually took me a while to figure out what kind of woodpecker it is. So give it your best guess and let's see who can name that woodpecker.

Nah..."ginger-head spotty back!" I know it's a long name...but it works for show dogs and horses!

I have a bunch of field guides for birds. But, the is an iPhone app for birds that has helped me with them immensley. Its called Birds USA. It lets you pick the state and the month and week of the month and then allows you to be quized by images, songs, binomial name, family or family latin. You can also just use it as a guide and by picking the type of bird's group and searching from there. Then once you pick the group, say woodpeckers, treecreepers and nuthatchers. It displays the 18 birds that could be in my state during that week of that month. Then you can pick by other options.

If I pick red-bellied woodpecker based on its image. I get a bigger picture to confirm as well as the choice to listen to its song or get more information on the bird.

The quiz format forces you to learn and retain the name of the birds. It is a great way to pass time while waiting in lines and what not.

Probably shortens a few lines, too, I'd imagine.
