Thread: Virus got me AGAIN!!!

  1. #1

    Default Virus got me AGAIN!!!

That's 2 computers in two weeks!! This time I immediately shut it down and left it alone until the techs can get it out. I really really would like to get my hands on whoever is responsible for this. I can promise you it would not be a pretty sight. I'm glad we got this laptop!
For some reason it seems better protected, than the desktop, dont ask me why. I am not a 'puter whiz like some of you. I'm doing good to hunt and peck!! LOL I am not going anywhere else but here. I don't know if it has anything to do with photobucket,as I did not go there. However there were some pics from another site that were from photobucket. I don't know if that has anything to do with the virus attack or not. I do know that everyone needs to be very careful, that is why I am posting this here instead of just posting in the adware thread.

    Be Careful out there!!

That sucks. I know out District site for Boy Scouts has a virus. They keep saying that it is gone, but I and a few others have been hit by it. My Wife's computer crashed so hard that I had to reformat it. Thankfully she has been good about backing up her information (and that the info was not infected). I know of six or seven other folks who have had to reformat their computer also from an attack. It is pretty bad because so much of what we do had become electronic. The boys need to sign-up for some upcoming classes, and they can't because of the site being infected. I hope they fix it soon, as I am tired of getting calls from folks who think I can do something to fix their computer (since my Wife was the one who warned them about it).

Poco, have you been to photobucket on that computer in the last week? It takes it a while to go off... it's like a time bomb. also I'd like to know if it's the bankerfox / antivirus live thing thats going around.

At least with my Mac I have a much less chance of a virus taking my computer down
    I know what hunts you.

Poco - Have you used any discs? Any DVDs, CDs? I suspect something else has the virus and you're recontaminating yourself. Think about any other drives you might have been using. Not necessarily at the time the virus popped up. Depending on the virus it could be timed.

WELL I can tell you do NOT waste your money on Trend, from Best Buy/ The Geek Squad, I detected the virus not the AV program. I recognized the symptoms from last week.

What I had (It's gone now my Tech support and I just spent about 5 hours working on both my desktop and my Laptop.) was the CSRSS.EXE virus (This time anyway) You will know if you have it. An Unknown "antivirus" program will tell you your system is infected (which it is) and to download the AV program to resolve the issue. Whatever you do DO NOT download that darn thing it will terminate your machine. You cannot even log in in "safe mode"(Don't ask me how I know).

NO I have just visited the same sites that I normally do. One of them did have some Photobucket pics that I noticed downloading in the taskbar at the bottom of the screen. Now whether that has anything to do with it I do not know. No Rick I have not downloaded anything from discs or any other media. This thing is strictly on the 'Net. That is why I say BE CAREFUL!! You can be sure that I now have 24/7 tech support through iYogi. They solved my Virus issues. I know some/most of you may be able to do this without Tech support, however I am not that "savvy" with PC's. Now a horse on the other hand....
As far as timed I have only had this PC 6 days. It happened last night and I immediately shut the PC down. The Tech support said it happened last night. So I would have to say no it is not timed. It does not "sleep" and then come to life. At least that is what they said.

We have had over 30 client machines infected by the fake "Windows Security" virus the past several weeks. Some have got it from surfing, other from emails, and quite a few from the social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace.

We usually run MBAM from www.malwarebytes.org and it finds it. There is a free version that's has an on demand scanner and it works great.

one other thing you can do to protect yourself from malware is to manually type links, like the one posted just above this, into the browser rather than clicking on them. Sometimes code is written into the links themselves. by manually typing them in you avoid whatever was written into the link.

this is especially useful for e-mails. I never click on a link in an e-mail even if it's from someone I know. Malware gets ahold of systems and sends out e-mails in the name of the infected system's user.

I suppose it's also possible for a jerk to post links like this in forums as well. Even if it appears to be a well known site name in the link it could be malware instead or send you to a site that looks like the real deal, but is not.

I was recieving a bunch of forwarded e-mails from a buddy's e-mail address and before viewing them asked him if he was sending me e-mail or if he put me on a forward list or the like. He did not. his system was infected and sending out bogus emails to everyone. All you have to do is open the email and you're toast.

Thanks for the warning on the Trend Micro. I've been using it for 3 years now on several systems since I lost a PC to Norton 360 on install. I've had my doubts though and have been looking at ESET. It seems to be getting pretty good reviews. I don't know anybody using it though.

The one I keep hearing over and over(not just here) as being a good one is Kapersky. More people that actually have it, say it is a good one to have. I don't personally know. I have heard all the others being bashed somewhere by someone who has it. I have not heard a single Kapersky owner say anything bad about it.

the only bad thing i've ever heard about KIS or KAV is that it can make things slow, but that's the price you pay to be virus free. The new KIS2010 is pretty fast for me.

There's a slight hesitation between pages, but it's checking em out, only a second or two. No bigee. plus you can run virtual browsers and virtual keyboard, banner ad blocker, pop up blocker, email scanner, anti-spam, etc. etc. Configurable firewall, all kinds of goodies and tweaks for the techies out there, and it can be installed default for guys like me and works very well. You can set it to scan external media and drives when connected or have it prompt you and ask what to do. That's how I avoided the college virus last fall. It will scan your OS, apps, activeX, programs and browser for vulnerabilities too and fix them or let you fix them. that way lots of malware never gets a chance to access your system in the first place.

plus, it's nice being able to surf and never ever get a pop up or banner ad.
All the reports show Kaspersky eliminating more threats than any other antivirus too. There are many unbiased sites that compare em all and KIS comes out on top in almost every category.

Having said all that I'll probably find out I have a virus tomorrow. LOL!

Every virus protection out there is good ---- until one gets by and trashes your computer ----- then it is the worst POS in the world. I suspect that there is no virus protection out there that is 100% - for ever.

I have listened to all of this virus talk...Adding my 2 cents. I am fairly versed on PC's but no expert, no formal training. I have never used an antivirus. This PC was bought in 2003.. It is an HP. Anyhow. I just restore and keep on getting it. I have an external hard drive for my files. My C drive is empty. It seems to me it is flawless and with what I have saved on BS. heck I can buy a new pc. just my 2 cents...
Keep in mind the problem may be extremely complicated, though the "Fix" is often simple...
