What are some of your favorite "preparedness" foods that can be eaten as they are or only need heating up?

That is a good example. Store what you eat. A crisis is certainly not the time to get used to new and or "exotic" foods.

Is that Stag Chili packaged in those "cradboard" juice box looking containers? We did get it once at one of the big boxplaces and have not seen it around here since. I did like it

I buy mine from MREDepot. They have sales all the time so don't go out and start buying. Get on their mailing list and take advantage of the sales. The cheese is really quite good. We really like it and being canned it will last a long time. The butter is real butter and tastes like butter. I buy the canned bacon from them too. Werlings meats I buy directly from Werlings unless I catch it on sale at MREDepot. They sell it, too.

Just add water means simplicity. Adding milk means I have to break into my powder mix. I like the Betty Crocker blueberry muffin mix you just add water too and its only a buck per package. Also the Knorr side items[formerly Lipton] are a buck each and are very good also for a buck each from Walmart. With many varietys and simplicity. I especially like the hot muffins after dinner

I only keep enough for 2 people for about a month off-grid at this point. What do you guys keep on hand?

I'm about where you are too, Lowkey.
My biggest problem is I cook everything from scratch and Winnie jnr and me don't like much in the tinned food department. Especially veggies bleughhh! closely followed by tinned ready to eat meat meals and Tuna. Although we do like Spam, Corned Beef and tinned Salmon, Sardines and Herring. This is one of the reasons I got a dehydrator. We like dehydrated veg and I think we'll like dehydrated meat. We eat a lot of pasta, some of which I make myself, dry and store.
There's a very limited range of tinned meats over here and some are so high in salt, they're inedible! (I've tried them).
This summer should see the veg garden take off and the store cupboard filled more to our taste.

I'm not big on canned veggies either. Corn is ok in cans.
I'm really checking into one of those small solar freezer units mentioned in another thread though cuz right now I blanch and freeze quite a large number of yellow beans, broccoli and summer squash. It would suck if I lost power again any time before the end of February (that's when the electric freezer starts getting a little lean.)

    Just a heads-up on storage.............

I've posted a thread or two about the shelf-life of canned foods, and the gist is that many will last 10 years or more if properly stored in a cool place.

The last time I checked my stock, I had three cans of Del Monte fruit - one fruit cocktail and two canned peaches - that had ruptured. All were purchased in 2007, and 48 cans were dumped last year. I don't think I'll be adding any more of that brand to my long-term stocks.

That's a big problem over here, Ken. Tinned goods just aren't made for long term storage! I had 2 tins of Bobcats food rupture a couple of months ago. The main reason is a lot of foods now come in ring pull type cans, and that seal I'm sure won't last long term. I'm loath to store much for this reason. I'll just have to get inventive with home storage solutions.

Winnie, one thing that burns me is the fact that Folgers is no longer using metal cans for coffee. I've opened a 10 year old can and it was about as fresh as a new one. I'm convinced that the plastic ones won't stay fresh nearly as long. And now, some companies are converting to cardboard "cans."

I grind my coffee beans once in a while, but prefer to keep the ground version in stock.

Try storing your freezer in an unheated outbuilding,if the power goes out during a cold snap, your freezer wont thaw out unless temps start to climb, then you will have roughly 48 hours with a full freezer to get a generator hooked into it,the power to come back on,or use up what is in there.

Oh don't get me started on those cardboard thingies! I've come to 2 conclusions about these things. #1 food companies like to be seen as being "green" less packaging, tree hugging, hair shirt wearing, holier than thou saving the planet, "we've done a survey and our customers want this" conglomorates.
#2 If they use packaging other than a good solid tin/can. you can't store the blasted things and if you do it spoils! either way we the consumer have to buy more of their "green" packaged food!
So MY conclusion is #1 they've seen a market opportunity to hit us with a double whammy.#2 They've put the price up,(you go and check, recyclable packaging is more expensive) and make us buy more because the stuff won't store properly!
OK blood pressure up, rant over.
