Default Good News!! (Forum "Charity" related)

I asked Chris if I could auction off an Item with ALL proceeds from this going to this Charity that Sourdough kinda' got rolling. His reply was Short and sweet...
    that is fine
So I am going to start an auction on this knife I got at Jamboree.
    Some information on it (specs)
    10 1/4" OAL(Over all Length)
    6 1/4" BL(Blade Length)
It is 440C stainless steel. It has Pewter and Mammoth Tusk(Ivory) handles.
It is a Custom One-off knife made by D.E.Brown of Nortonville, Ky.
This means that he may make another knife that is similar, but never one that is identical. This means that it is a one-of-a-kind knife.

I would like the bidding to start out with $25 and to increase by increments of $5 until it reaches $100 and then in increments of $1.
The Money DOES NOT go to/come to me!! It goes to the fund. I will pay S/H to whomever wins the Auction.
This is just a Preview. The Auction will not start until Monday Night January 25th at 7PM CST and will end Wednesday night January 27th at 9PM CST. This will allow time for Chris to cancel this in case he changes his mind, and for everyone to be aware of it. For those that know a member that would be interested, please make sure that they are notified if you know how to get in touch with them. This Auction is open ONLY to members who Have already joined this Forum as of the 15th of January 2010,And are at least 21 years of age Proof of age is required to the winning bid, should proof not be sufficient,it will go to the next bid and so on until adequate proof of age is obtained. (Really shouldn't be a problem) The money will be sent to Crash, and I will send the knife to the winning bidder. Please stay tuned!

Just as a reminder, This knife was handled by everyone at the Jamboree, and kind of carries the spirit of that meeting, It does have some sentimental value for anyone concerned with this Forum.

How would you like to do the bidding? Do you want it sealed bid by PM'ing you or open bidding on the forum? If open bidding I don't want anyone getting upset if they get into a bidding war with someone.

Just a thought...If you have closed bidding with folks PM'ing you then no one would know who is bidding. You could always post the latest bid amount so everyone would know how much they need to bid. That puts more work on you having to keep track.

Open bidding will certainly work as long as everyone has fun with it and no one gets upset. I'll be happy to do it how ever you want.

There are some auction addons for vBulletin, if the auction thing gets to be a common thing it might be worth looking into.

OK if I do the Closed bidding I will have to do it over a smaller amount of time. This could be inconvenient to others in different time zones. The only possible solution to that would be to have it on a weekend lasting only a few hours, and could jam the forum.I don't know if I could keep current in a closed auction reading PM's and posting what the current bid is.This is assuming that several people were bidding at the same time. If held openly, it would be by who posted X amount first. Also it would be out in the open where everyone could see,and no one could accuse of favoritism Because I list say you as the first bid as opposed to Joe Schmoe, for $10, or whatever. Not to mention that it could be open longer, with more access to all. That way I could,at the end be waiting with a post to say "Bidding closed" when the closing time happens to occur. I don't think I could keep my PM box cleaned out fast enough either. Even if only 20 people were bidding, 5 pm's each would fill my box.
Honestly,I think the fairest way is out in the open, just like any public auction. Whoever has the final bid when I post Bidding closed, will be the winner. I won't be able to see who it is as I will be waiting to hit submit on that post. The last post before mine that says "Bidding closed" will be the winner. I don't think anyone could be mad about that as I won't even know who it is,when I postBidding closed. RED will NOT be the color I use either!! LOL

To let it be open longer and to keep feeling from being hurt, how about we get a couple of representatives keep up with the bids via messages. And to keep the inboxes from becoming too full, differentiate who they send their messages to by their alphabetical order. (i.e. People with Screennames's A-G submit their bids to Representative 1, H-M to Representative 2 and so forth.) Then the Representatives can post their highest bidder every hour or half-hour. That way not one of the bidders would know who has the highest bid until the end. If there happens to be more than one person to bid the same amount for the highest bid. Then those two can try to come to some type of an agreement.

Or you could do it your way. I think that everyone around here is friendly enough and there won't be any problems with the open bidding.

Poco - All very good arguments on your part. Especially the favoritism issue. So...when do you want to start the bidding?

Another thought - set a reserve price (minimum bid) and then if folks want it they get one bid via pm. Kind of a silent auction. Highest bid wins it - no back and forth bidding. I do think that the way you described would work just fine though. It's for a good cause, so no feelings should be hurt.

Yeah, I think an open auction would be the easiest for you Poco and I dont think there will be hard feelings.

Okay, Now I am kinda' worried. I don't want anyone to have feelings hurt,or be mad at someone else. I just want to contribute the best way I can to a good cause.

I know that just about everyone here is "cool" with each other. We really are like a big family. This is one reason I call this place home.

Crash I do have a reserve price in mind, but what is really important is to get some funds into this thing now. I really believe that if the bid guidelines I set forth in post 1 starting this thread, that the "Reserve" will be met in short order. I know the approximate value of this blade, It ain't cheap. But that is NOT the concern I have. Funding this "Cheerity" IS what is important. It seems that from reading the kick off thread started by Sourdough, that this is not really "Charity" as much as it is to lift someones spirits. So a "Cheerity" is what I am calling it.Just something to help brighten someones Day when things are tough. To bring a little Cheer to them.

The auction WILL NOT be started or continued in this thread. This is just a Preview, to let everyone know what, when, where, why, and how, the auction will be conducted. I will start another thread "Auction Open" - "Bid Starts with $25 do I hear $25?" The next time I will say anything in an "Official" capacity is to say that it is closed. I Will Not Bid!!

If for some reason the reserve is not met..... Instead of closing the auction I will post "reserve not met" the chances of this happening are slim. My Reserve is NOT what the estimated value is. It is less. That is enough "clues". I want this to be as fair as possible. For this reason I don't want to involve anyone else (again with the favoritism thing) I will simply close it blindly at the appointed time. That way I won't know who has the last bid. I think out in the open is the only fair, honest way to do this. We have to trust each other to not be hurt or mad. That is my biggest concern about this.

DISCLAIMER/rules: WSF(this Forum) is not in any way responsible for this Auction. I have the Item, I am the SOLE responsible party. As such, I offer the knife, will open the auction, close the auction, and ship the knife. The funds will be sent to the designated Treasurer.I Receive NOTHING from this auction, except for the satisfaction of knowing that I have helped contribute.
Last post before I close the auction is the Winner/recipient as soon as:
    1) proof of age 21 or older is verified.
    2) method of payment to TREASURER,NOT ME, is ascertained by Treasurer.
3)Once payment go ahead is given to me by the Treasurer, I will send the knife.
    4) As soon as Treasurer gives me shipping go ahead(all the above have been met), I will PM the winner for their mailing address.
    ************************************************** ************

Please Keep in mind this is for a good cause.Let's all be friends and not let this cause any ill will between anyone. I won't even know who the winner is until after it is over(I'll be waiting to hit the submit button to close the auction.) Any changes in schedule are up to me and me alone. The only exception is if Chris or one of his designates(Moderators acting on Chris' behalf) pull the plug on the auction.
