Default do you know how much you have?

this goes with my thread "how much is enough" i was thinking as people said how much food they have, how do you know that you have 3 months worth of food?
i mean have you measured it? i did tonight, i took a 450gram bag of black beans and measured how many cups were in it and found 2.5 cups of dry beans, now each 1 cups of beans yeilds 3 cups of cooked beans
then i took 2 cups of rice(will measure how many cups in a 15lb bag soon) and made dinner plus 1 pork belly also used 2 cups of white corn meal and also 2.75 cup of wheat bran for muffins
    so summarized
    1 cup of beans
    2 cups of rice
    2 cups corn meal
    2.75 cups of whaet bran
    2 green tea bags

there is pretty much breakfast ,lunch and dinner, not very exciting but i can calculate 3 months worth of food for this meal alone then add my other six meals per feeding as i said before 7breakys, 7 lunches, 7 dinners and 7 snacks multiply by 90 or 180 or 365 days
    get it/
good now go measure how many bowls of cereal per box or what have you and let me know

Or you could look at the label and see how many servings per container there are.

well that is an idea but have you ever seen a "family" sized can of ravioli? family sized my..........
crash, everyone eats differently what a serving of rice for me would be might be half of what you would call a serving, what i want is everyone who does store food to really look at what they are storing and how long it will truly last and also if they could afford to be chairatable whith nieghbors who come knocking on their door because they did not prepare or did not prepare enough

I understand, and think it's a great idea. As you say - how do you know that you have X months of food stored. Lables are still a pretty good option though. For example: I just looked at a can of Progresso soup. If I'm making it a meal, then I have the whole can, but usually half along with a sandwich. Label say it contains two servings. I also pulled a 5 lb bag of rice out of the closet. Label says that one serving is 1/4 cup dry (about 1 cup cooked) and that the bag contains 48 servings. So, if you know that a serving for you is two cups cooked then the bag would contain 24 servings. Now, a lot of the food that gets stored isn't in the original containers, so the exercise that you are suggesting is a good one. I would add that because of stress/labor a consideration might be given to add 10% or 15% to ones calculations.

As near as I can tell that's pretty much all the time. I think I've figured out the P can stand for Pre, Post or Passing through.

One method of knowing how much you have stored is to go back one year and add up all your groceries. Then divide it by 12. If you really want to know then go back three years, or 30 months. You will have a good average. You would have to adjust for additional family and such.

I would rotate my food and only store stuff that I currently eat. That way it's always fresh.

how would one store food underground or the like and know it's still good in 5 years? even if it's airtight/ watertight how do you know your grains aren't full of pantry beetles/ moths by then? They are in the food when you purchase it.

Once again, I agree 100%, with Rick!
That takes care of the week before, the week of, and the week after. Now, in the one week left in the month, 4 of those days, shes in a bad mood "just because", so that leaves about 3 good days, out of the month.

I know this may come as a shock to some of y'all, but I have been a smart arse before, and gotten in trouble on each of those three days, and had to wait an entire month, for the next "good" day, to get back out of the doghouse!

those 3 good days are the days shes ovulating. so if you dont want a baby right now well those 3 days shes lovey are the 3 days you should stay away from her.

this is really where I'm stumped... I don't know how much meat is a serving, or how much meat is in each package, because I processed it myself. My 16.5 freezer is packed, my grandmas 12 is packed, and I've still got the garden growing. Half my freezer is deer meat, and half veggies, grandma's is all veggies. We had to get a seperate freezer for hides and other animal goodies... wife got mad when she went for peas and a coyote greeted her...
anyway, we packed enough in each package to have a little leftover from each meal.. I guess about a pound and a half of burger each, to feed 5, along with veggies, I should have enough to last a good long time.. 45 packs of burger, 20 packs (left) of sausage, 2 hams 4 rib slabs, 4 butt roasts... 18-1gallon bags of mustards, 27-1gallon bags of turnips (with roots mmmmm)I could go on but you see my standing in that it's kinda hard to measure if it's not store bought. I think, if supplemented with fishing (which I guarantee I will be doing in the next few weeks) I would think what I have stored right now will last well over 9 months.
It is kinda frustrating tho, to keep rotating all that stock...
to answer the question though, No, but I know I got a lot!!

Default This is why I'm into dehydrating now

Commercially prepared stuff is too expensive, and you need to make things as compact as possible or the house gets overrun.

I purchased a good dehydrator and a can seamer. I buy empty cans with lids (I use #2.5 cans, about the size of the large tomato cans, 28 oz). I wanted to go with cans because they are pretty vermin proof.

Just yesterday I dehydrated 8 one pound bags of frozen sliced carrots, which I got on sale for 79 cents a bag, and all 8 lbs. fit into ONE #2.5 can. I slip in an oxygen absorber, seal the can, and it's good for 20 years.

What's my point here as it relates to this thread? Inventory is easier this way. I know the amount of rice, carrots, pinto beans or whatever that fits in a #2.5 can and I label them accordingly.

One #2.5 can holds 3 one pound bags of frozen cut green beans once they are dried. A pound of green beans (rehydrated) is about 4 good servings, or 12 servings per can. If I look on my shelf and I have 12 cans of dried green beans, I have 144 servings of green beans.

This is my system and I'm stickin' to it
