The whole of Britain and his wife are moaning like there's no tomorrow. Yup about the weather!
There wasn't enough warning(4 days is enough I think) The council are to blame for the state of the roads, there's no food in the shops, businesses are losing trade, air travel is disrupted, schools are closed. And it's all the fault of someone.
Oh for goodness sake get a grip and deal with it!
Sorry, had to rant.

i said the same thing when my grandmother tried to tell me you can't get by in oregon without gas/electric heat.

a suggestion if i may winnie
document what is going on around you, maybe a trip to the grocery store to see what they have run out of and what does not move and anything else like if power fails in cettain areas how long before they repair it. we had a big blackout here in 2004 or maybe 2003 i'd have to review my notes but i wrote down sveral pages while all this was going on and what i had on hand vs what i needed and how others reacted. might help in your preperations also makes for interesting reading years later

That's what I like about you, WE. Always thinking out of the box. I think that's a great idea. Taking note of what items are still in the store and figuring out how to make use of them would also be a good undertaking. You could figure out how to utilize what would be in abundance if something bad did happen.

On the serious side, it is a good idea. Since I've been here, my preps have improved enormously. I've certainly taken more notice of what to store and as important, I'm also storing in different ways, so I don't rely on one method.
I went into town yesterday and the usual, eggs, milk, bread and fresh veg were in short supply. I took a stroll straight to the tinned goods aisle and stocked up on some tinned veg and meat(oo I found BACON Spam!!) I also got some more chicken feed and Bobcat food.
Sorry I had a rant but the mentality of blaming someone for natures fickleness really irritates me. It's not like there was no warning, people just don't heed it.

Oh I think it's funny too! I have the girls for eggs, I'm getting two or three a day(good barter items) and I don't bother with bread, I keep plenty of bread flour, much more versatile. I can make my own pasta with it too! As for milk, I have the equivalent of 40 pints in dried milk, so I'm not overly bothered, I get more concerned about having enough cooking ingredients, not the end product.

The only concern I have are power cuts, and only because of the freezer contents.

Winnie, if you have power cuts & it's sub-zero, find a safe place out in the cold to temporarily store your frozen food. Same thing for your fridge if you have a "cold room." Just thinkin'.....

We all know its the government's fault for scheduling weather like that all at once and not notifying the public that they need to prepare for it. Its the government's responsibility to ensure our comfort.

Aha! Thankyou. The shed is pretty secure and freezing. The pantry is actually colder than the fridge at the moment

We have some food stored in our bedroom. No heat back there and the temp right now is 28 degrees F. (just kidding about having food in the bedroom, but the temp I'm dead serious about.)

Yesterday there was rain through the night and below freezing temps in the morning. a 27 car pile up in Atlanta yesterday morning. I think people are just oblivious to the world around them and they think it will stop for them so they can run to the convenience store.
The weather is truly my worst enemy, both professionally as a roofer, and as a hobbyist tanner. I pay attention to what the weather is doing.

They do the same thing up north in P-town also. They act like there has never been snow before. Happens every year, and will continue to happen. Freezing rain also (the kind that freezes when it hits the ground and builds up on trees and wires). Folks panic. I know we have had some milder winters in the past, but traditionally up there it snows on Halloween, freezing rain on Thanksgiving, nice and warm on Christmas, blizzard on New Years, then nice until February. After that, they will get a storm and some snow (sometimes a lot of snow) up until May. Every year though, the folks who didn't grow up in this neck of the woods (or the places north of us in this case) just panic and say what unusual weather we are having.
