Question Survival Training Resources? any tips

Hey I'm a noob here. I have been looking for wilderness survival training videos by a real expert. Tired of the Google goose chase.
Based on the preview, this one survival video looks intriguing, but it hasn't been released yet.

Can anyone point me to some wilderness/outdoor survival videos that are available now. Either as a download, or a DVD to buy?

    First, welcome to the forum.

Second, I've edited your link - it did not work, but probably a good idea to

Third, Stop by the Introduction section http://www.wilderness-survival.net/f...splay.php?f=14 and tell us a bit about yourself. There is a sticky that might give you some ideas of the kind of information that would be helpful for folks to answer questions for you. Thanks.

Can you be a little more specific as to what you are looking for. We've got some members that have made great training videos, and we've got links posted to many more. If you can narrow down what you want, it may be easier to help.

Sure thing. It must be informational on outdoor, wilderness survival, and should be led by a team of or at least one real world expert. e.g. military, or SAR type, not just a guide.

I don't really need the arctic/cold weather stuff though I would consider that a bonus.

I just want something that gives me a well rounded approach to outdoor survival. I remember reading a survival guide when I was a kid, that showed how to make a figure 4 deadfall and other things, but I am so busy now it would be much easier if I could do it online, or via DVD etc. I don't remember the name of the book that I read as a kid unfortunately. But it was great.

Anyhow I guess I shouldn't be in such a hurry, but I saw the one above and I am now on a mission to have a video course. though you guys might know of one.

    hope that helps.

    Here's to survival!!!!

Wilderness survival actually covers a lot of territory. Are you looking for anything specific (medical, food gathering, water, shelter building) or something in general?

Ray Mears is good as is Doug Ritter. Tony Nestor. There's tons of stuff from Tom Brown.

EDIT: Sorry. I was typing while you guys posted.

You can look at videos, but the best thing is to get some hands on under real world conditions. Many Community Colleges have courses, as do other sources.

If you are from the area Oregon Firearms Academy has this course and an advanced one. Not a bad course, and from an entirely diffrent point of view from a "normal" course.

I don't think there are any well rounded videos on wilderness survival or what have you. Most take a different look at things based on the person doing the vid and their background or likes/ dislikes. Urban, primitive, militant, etc.

I think Ray Mears has some of the best vids out there and A-Z bushcraft has some excellent ones too, but both have more of a European flair. Dave Canterbury is more local to me, but he seems to take a more modern/ military approack to things which is fine. Use whatcha got or are familiar with.

Although, I don't think military knowledge is a prerequisite to be considered a good survival video, but that's just me. As far as I know some of the most knowledgable survival folks have absolutely no military background.

One thing you might consider is researching how native americans lived and what they did to survive. After all, most of our military survival knowledge and expertise originated with them and other aboriginal peoples of the world.

Unfortunately, it would require reading and for the most part not watching videos. I think the videos are great, but if you really want to learn, and be confident using this stuff you need to do a little research of your own.

One thing to remember is that you can watch all these cool vids and these guys make it look real easy sometimes, but when you actually go out in the field and try to procure the materials needed, make the things and figure out how to use them you soon realize that it's much harder than it looks. I guess practice makes perfect.

On the subject of vids. I notice eHow has alot, but whenever I click one to watch it never loads, just a blank screen. What's up with that? Does anybody else have this problem?

I've had a lot of trouble with newer Flash videos. My home computer is too old to update to the latest Flash player and some people create videos without the older versions in mind.

As RWC says above, I wouldn't limit yourself to military-type videos. People who are guides in your particular survival area may know more about the local information than a generic military survival vid. Also consider how you store your info. If you ever need it off-grid, a good book or three can be indispensable.

I gonna you the benefit of doubt here.

I think it would be wise to review this entire forum.
The majority of the B.S. has been filtered out of just about any subject you can name, by a lot of very knowledge people, that read, studied, tried out, etc, in short, "Are doing it"

Your job is to use your own mind to decide what "IT" is.

Then you can form specific questions, and I'm sure you will receive as much help as you need.

The biggest part of survival is you, using you own mind, to survive.
