I've never heard of that tradition. I also eat very little on new years day but for a different reason!

I gave that up years ago. Well, okay, there was that one New Years that I did the lemon drops with my co-worker's wife until after midnight but my wife was there, I swear and so was her husband. Honest!

We always start the new year with black eyed peas (the food, not the musical group)

    Hoppin' John Recipe

    Ingredients
    2 tablespoons butter
    1 small onion, chopped
1 small red bell pepper, chopped
    Garlic powder
    2 cups black-eye peas, cooked
    2 cups cooked rice
    House Seasoning, recipe follows
8 sprigs fresh parsley, for garnish
    Directions
Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion, bell pepper, and garlic powder, to taste, and cook for 5 minutes. Add peas and rice and cook an additional 10 to 15 minutes. Be careful not to overcook; this dish is best if the bell pepper and onion still have a crunch to them. Add House Seasoning, to taste. Garnish each serving with sprig of parsley.

    House Seasoning:

    1 cup salt

    1/4 cup black pepper

    1/4 cup garlic powder

Mix ingredients together and store in an airtight container for up to 6 months.

i got a nice heatgun, which i'm already putting to great use, a nice gift certificate, which i've already used to get more sandpaper, sanding belts, epoxy, a smooth mill file, etc.

i also got some cozy socks.

Yeah us as well. Seems to work. Over all we have had 9 prosperous and wonderful years.
If by what I have learned over the years, allow me to help one person to start to prepare. If all the mistakes I have made, let me give one person the wisdom that allows them to save their life or the life of a loved one in an emergency. Then I will truly know that all the work I have done will have been worth every minute.

RWC - Congrats on the 10/22. Do yourself a favor and invest in an extended mag release if the new one doesn't have one. You won't regret it.

sjj, out of curiosity and completely off-topic, but just how "far north" are you? Do you actually call it "corn bread" or do you refer to it as "johnny cake"?
