got the list updated.

I would really like a printable copy of this list. Is there a way to remove the "story" and just have the list as a printable? I would really like to have a few copies of this list to keep with my field guides. It would save me from having to dig through the guides to find the injury, then the plant in the book, then the plant in the woods. When time is critical, this "quick reference" could save you precious minutes by looking up the ailment, and the plant to go with it, THEN finding a picture in the book, etc...

Thanks guys. The list is growing and it is surprising at the plants that have multiple uses. A lot of good info is getting posted now that we are back on track.

YCC I think the only way you can make a list like you are talking about, is to edit your post, by copying/pasting the entries into one location/post. You could multi-quote all the posts that have entries of interest,and delete the extra stuff from these posts. It might take a while initially,but as newer entries are added it is pretty simple to edit in the new stuff by simply quoting the old post you made adding the new info and then deleting the old "list". Basically that is what I did with Crash's Christmas giveaway thread,when someone threw their name in the hat.

Honey and sugar stop bacteria growth in a wound. Soaking in salt water or vinegar (acid) solution does the same. All these things are used for the preservation of food for the same reason. Touching your tongue to a turpentine bottle three times was used a generation before me for many ailments, now we talk about pine needles. What we used quite a bit was a poultice of small sassafras leaves for infection and I've seen it work when doctors said amputation was the solution. We always just wrapped the leaves in a sock or twisted them in a piece of cloth then beat them with a hammer until they turned into a slimy green mass. It took care of a red streak running up my leg when I stepped on some glass or something in a stagnant pool of water as a boy.
I've stopped bleeding many many times with duck tape or electrical tape wrapped tight. Once I stopped a head wound when there was a large pool of blood upstairs and another pool in a garage below just by wrapping it tight enough.

I was just doing a search for "red osier dogwood uses" and came upon this.

Another link that lists thousands of plants and their potential uses including medicinal, oils, cordage, food, tannins, etc. This is the medicinal page and it's broken down by body part/ ailment with links to the plants that can be used

If you go back to the main home page there are similar links for the other uses like edibilty and soap or oil, etc. with a similar breakdown.

It's not extremely detailed, but if you have a specific ailment you can use the link to find out which plants will treat it and then google "the plants name+uses" like I did with the red osier dogwood and you'd be amazed at what comes up. Specific use of plant including preperation, dosage and such.

There are some very in depth scientific articles using big words I don't understand describing the exact chemical compounds that have been extracted and then synthesized by man for commercial sale/ use.

Pretty intersting stuff. As for the red willow, I just put it in a pipe and smoked it.

That looks like a really good link. I will be doing some more research on there and I will be ammending the original post to include this link for others to research plants that are in their area for medicinal uses.

The area containing tannin info will be very helpful in my hobby.

This week I've had a cold and earlier this year I transplanted some mullein into my yard. I dried a few leaves and with the cold, I've been self medicating with the mullein. It opens up my lungs and sinuses for quite some time and gives quite a bit of relief from my ails. I say it works from experience, although not long term experience. I'll roll a cigarette with crumbled leaves and smoke it just like a regular cig. I smoke about half a cig at a time, wait 15 minutes and I'm usually opened up by then.
In the fall I collected some sassafras roots, and dried them. This week, once a day, I've been taking the root tea to help with my sinuses and sore throat, and it has all the advantages of mullein, helping with the mucilaginous areas with the added benefit of soothing my throat.
These things work folks. give it a try WITH CAUTION AND MODERATION. I intend to try some mullein leaf tea very soon to see if it gives the same effect as smoking or burning like incense.
